10 Tips to Increase the Facebook Business Page Reach from Top ...

Want to increase the engagement on your Facebook business page?

It?s not easy right now.

You spend $$$?s and work hard to get people to like your Facebook business page and then you struggle to reach out to those people.

To help you, I asked the following question from the top Facebook marketing experts.

Q: What is your best tip to increase the reach of your Facebook page?

I?m so honored and thank full for all the experts who took the time to respond to my question.

Hope you?ll enjoy the post and don?t forget to add your experience regarding Facebook marketing in the comments section below.

#1 Guy Kawasaki

Guy is the author of eleven books including Enchantment, What the Plus!, Reality Check, The Art of the Start, Rules for Revolutionaries, How to Drive Your Competition Crazy, Selling the Dream, and The Macintosh Way. He is also the co-founder of Alltop.com, and a founding partner at Garage Technology Ventures. Previously, he was the chief evangelist of Apple.

Two things: always include a picture or embed a video and always include a link to the source. I?m presuming that the link or video is something that is interesting, so you are providing a valuable curation service to your followers/friends.

#2 Andrea Vahl

Andrea is a Social Media coach, strategist and speaker. She is also the co-author of Facebook Marketing All-in-One for Dummies book that came out in August 2011.

Facebook Reach numbers have been going down, there is no disputing it.? Whether the decrease in Reach is due to a change in the algorithm or actual reach has been debated extensively.? But what can you do to make sure you are benefiting your audience while getting more visibility?

My advice is to focus on creating the best, shareable content that you can.? I like creating shareable images that either teach something, inspire your audience, or spark conversation.

I take an image from stock photos (I like?www.123rf.com), then add a quote (humanize brand image).? Or I use Snagit to do a screen capture and then add text to give people tips on how they can use social media.? (Get Facebook Stats on any Page)? When your images are being shared, you are increasing your visibility and helping your audience.

?

I like the strategy of commenting as your page on other pages with a large audience. ?Some might call it a hack, but doing this regularly will promote your page for free and allow you to extend your brand in a friendly, engaging manner.

?

#4 Brian Carter

?Brian is the Author of The Like Economy, Facebook Marketing, LinkedIn For Business. Search/social marketer, keynote speaker and trainer. Improv and stand-up comic.

?

?#1 is use promoted posts or sponsored stories. That?s the fastest way.

#2 is post things that get more interaction. Use InfiniGraph, reddit, and other sources to see what kind of posts get the most interaction, and do likewise.

?

#5 ?Ekaterina Walter

?Ekaterina is the Author of Think Like Zuck (Coming out soon), Social Innovator for Intel, Trendsetter, Speaker, Connector, Passionate Marketer & a Mom.

Don?t be afraid to go slightly off topic with your posts. Even if you have a very engaged audience on your page, you still probably have a lot of your customers who are silently watching your stream but not engaging.

The beauty of Facebook in its FOF effect (friends of fans). That means that when a person engages with a brand, his/her friends see that. That?s an amazing endorsement and opportunity for their friends to engage with you as well.

So try to get those silent types to engage with you buy varying your content, by trying to appeal to their passion points beyond just the topics your brand is comfortable with discussing.

For example, even though Intel is a technology company, we also talk about sports, music, games. We say happy holidays and offer interesting trivia beyond technology. We ask open-ended questions around people?s memories and experiences.

Just asking your fans what their favorite Olympic sport can inspire people to participate and root for the sport of their choice. Don?t be afraid to take some risks with your editorial calendar and content to get the conversation going on your page.

#6 Dennis Yu

Dennis is the CEO of BlitzLocal.com, an agency that does online advertising for big brands and yellow page category businesses.

?

My tip is to run page post ads to increase reach. Facebook claims the average is 16%. Without paid reach, organic engagement and EdgeRank suffers.

#7 Linda Bustos

?Linda is the Director of Ecommerce Research with Elastic Path Software

Ask your email subscribers to like your page at the bottom of every email. If you?re sophisticated, segment out those that click on the Facebook button from the email and send them emails with a different call to action going forward. Segmenting them out also shows you, which of your email subscribers are true brand ?fans? and who may be more likely to share your messages with their friends, etc.

Debbie is a social media blogger and writer, and consults with businesses on social media strategy. She has written countless articles about social media even before people were reading about the topic!??She has a passion for words, research, writing and reading. You can follow her on her blog?DebbieHemley.com

My?best?tip?be a continuing student of Facebook, and stay as up-to-date as humanly possible. Just when you think you?ve gotten the hang of Facebook they go and change something!

Tips that are relevant today may be old news by the time you go to implement them. That?s why I think if a business has identified Facebook as an integral part of their social media marketing strategy then the social media managers need to make a concerted effort to stay up-to-date on?everything Facebook related.

One way many people accomplish this is by adding a few industry blogs to their reading list, making sure to catch all articles with updates and how-to tips on Facebook. (In fact, my colleagues who have contributed on this post are a great place to begin?they are excellent go-to-sources on Facebook, I know they?ve been mine for a long time!) Having a social media community where you can share and exchange ideas is what helps make it so effective and real-time.

?Like? the?Facebook Marketing page?on Facebook where you can follow updates that Facebook themselves makes to help businesses stay up-to-date. For example, some of their recent updates were a series of optimizing tips, and a link to how to show promoted posts to the friends of people who like your page.

You can also follow @Facebook on?Twitter?and monitor hashtags related to Facebook, e.g. #facebook, #facebookmarketing. There are a number of monitoring tools that make this an easy, manageable task, e.g.?Hootsuite,?Monitter,?TweetChat,?TweetGrid, to name a few.

Finally, try to remember, maintaining presences on social networks is really akin to gardening?where you need to plant and water regularly to help them live long healthy lives.

?John is an Internet Entrepreneur ? Social Media Consultant and Experience Online Marketer.

?

For me, I much rather have people focus on expanding the reach of their blogs, since that is what they OWN. But if you are more focused on growing your FB page, then A few good ways to expand your reach are?

Add your FB url or button on your blog, in the header, footer and end of posts.

Add your FB url or button onto every social site you are on.

Add your FB url into all your outgoing emails, using a sig file works nicely.

Give something away Free, and ask people to like your page to receive the gift. Then promote this across your blog and social sites

?

I hope this post will help you to increase the reach of your Facebook business page.

I'm Struggling to Become A More Submissive Wife! | Black and ...

OK, my tongue is about to start bleeding. I?m biting down on it, trying not to say anything ?flip?, especially in front of the kids. You see, I?m practicing submission. Yes, I said ?practicing? because I haven?t always been generous in this aspect of my marriage. If you recall in one of my first BMWK posts, I shared with you some magical things that happened for me and how I overcame my blended family blues when I began to take this wifely responsibility of submission more seriously. As with many biblical principles, believing is one thing, but doing is a whole ?nother story.

Something that helped me, was breaking this thing down and understanding exactly what was needed in order to be a more submissive wife. We all know the definition of submission, but do we really understand the principles and the importance? I personally know how hard this is to do sometimes, but try not to think of it as being inferior or ?less than? to your husband, but quite the contrary. Instead, look at is a necessity for your marriage and for the welfare of your family. Like me, you may be struggling with submission, because you are a strong-willed and strong-minded individual. After all, he married you because he saw and loved your strengths, right?

First, lets break the word down. Simply put, the prefix ?sub means under?. Think of ?under? as the wind beneath his wings to help him soar and support his needs. Think of ?under? as foundation. We know that foundation is the absolute necessity upon which things are built. Without legs, the table will fall. Without solid foundation, even the most beautiful and extravagant homes will collapse. Hmmm?think about (worth repeating) without foundation, the home will collapse.

Ladies ? on a lighter note, think about that moment when you see another female without proper ?foundation? underneath her clothes and her body parts are shaking all over the place. You shake your head in disgust and your lips are turned up. Well, its the same thing. You seem and feel more ?together, in order and ?under control? being that foundation for your husband and family.

Now to the ?mission? part of submission. Mission is the goal and purpose of a plan in which the result is success. Who doesn?t want success for their marriage and family? Hopefully, the head of your household takes his role seriously and understands that his family depends on him. From personal experience, the mission of my husband and for our family is fluid. It can change at any given time, from getting ahead financially to focusing on family dynamics and anything in between. So, it should be important for you (the strong wife) to ?support the goal of success? for your family.

Disclaimer: This is by no means a suggestion to say yes to everything our husbands say or do, but to just simply serve as reminder of one of our duties as a Godly wife. When there is discord, you may want to check yourself to see if you?re being the foundation that he needs to make wise and sound decisions for your family or are you causing weakness in your foundation?

BMWK ? do you struggle with being a ?submissive? wife? ?What does it mean to you?

kirbycairo: On Language and its Organic Use. . . . . .

Listening to a professor of "language" on CBC this morning complain about the "gradual extinction" of French, I was struck by a number of things. First of all I was quite offended by her use of the word "literate." In reference to the shocking decline of French in Manitoba over the last century, the professor said that a hundred years ago approximately 60% of Manitobans were French speakers and now she would be surprised if 2% of the population were "literate French speakers." Now, besides the obvious elitism of a professor making reference to who is "literate" or not, I must ask - when will people (even well educated people) understand that literacy is not a fixed state to be achieved but a sliding scale of challenges and abilities that all people face in language as well as other parts of our daily life?? To bracket certain people off as "illiterate" is socially and politically offensive because it is a powerful process of exclusion and elitism. However, the fact that a professor of language was able to pass off such a remark with, apparently, little thought or understanding of the real implications is quite typical of "educated" people in general in every language. But this phenomenon seems particularly pronounced in French. This brings us to what I believe is one of the unrecognized reasons for the decline of French not just in North America but worldwide. It is not, I think,?controversial to suggest that French is a particularly "brittle" language, and its brittleness continues to be promoted by the culture and the establishment. The very existence of the so-called Acad?mie fran?aise is a three-hundred year old?testament?to the brittleness of the French language. And the "enforcement" of "proper" French at every level of French society has helped to foster the very elitism of which that professor was so blatantly guilty. If there exists a body that officially defines what is "proper" and "improper" in language, then one can "test" for the notion of "illiteracy" and as a result one cannot avoid the social exclusion that comes with fixed ideas about literacy. The effect of such practices can be seen easily in French Language education. I have seen three kids through French primary education, two through French high-school education and my youngest daughter currently attends French?immersion?in the English school board here in Ottawa. Instead of being a positive experience for my kids in what is a wonderful and important language, the entire process of blind, rule-oriented enforcement surrounding French has done nothing to encourage the continued use and cultivation of the language. Ironically, my oldest daughter who left primary French education for an English Arts high school, is the one of the children who has?displayed?a continued interest in French and her language skills continue to improve in at least three languages. However, one of the reasons she left French education was the harsh and punitive ways in which it was being taught and enforced.

Let me say it point-blank - one of the primary reasons that French is declining is that when you create official rules and enforcement around language in a context in which people have access to a flexible and non-rule oriented language, the former is going to suffer and decline. It is as simple as that. Roland Barthes, one of the greatest of all French linguists, famously argued in the 1980s that all 'official' rule of French, particularly those of spelling, should be dispensed with in order to let French grow in an organic and positive way. Predictably, Barthes endured a lot of flack for that position. However, because no one could question his?credentials?as an important French philosopher, he was able to make such statements in a large public forum. My partner and her family are Francophones, and many in her family are teachers. Ironically, even though they are Francophones, they all teach in English schools. In fact my sister-in-law is a principle at a English primary school. Despite her official position, her English really isn't that great. Though she functions ok, her English vocabulary is fairly poor and the depth of her cultural understanding in English is minimal at best. Let's make it clear, if someone had?commensurate?skills in French they would barely be able to get a job let alone be a principle of a school. But the flexibility of the English language (and the relative cultural tolerance that this flexibility has fostered) allow for a very large spectrum of English speakers to function in a wide variety of cultural ways. I believe that this, more than any other factor, has promoted the use and expansion of English. People who come from a different linguistic base have?surprisingly?few fears about using and functioning in English because, relative to French, they don't face the kind of elitist alienation that comes from making grammatical errors.

I have never had a grammar lesson in English in my whole life. Though my teachers in primary school occasionally corrected some usage that was thought to be an error, the notion of "proper" grammar in English barely existed for me growing up. My parent's generation surely got more exposure to official grammar instruction. But more and more as time passed people abandoned such strictness. And they abandoned it largely because it is simply nonsensical most of the time. Take a rule that was once thought to be?sacrosanct?in English - the split infinitive rule. There was a time when students were?severely?taken to task for splitting an infinite. You were not supposed to use a phrase like, for example, ?"to boldly go were no one has gone before." But the reason that this usage was frowned upon was simply because in the 18th century the protectors of English usage were generally well-educated British men who had all been forced to learn Latin in school. And of course in a so-called Romance language the infinitive generally cannot be split because it is one word not two as it is in English. The Latin infinitive for "to go" is simply "ire" and you cannot, therefore create a split infinitive because there is nothing to split. And because this was true in Latin (as well as in Spanish, French, etc.) grammarians thought that it was something that should be a "rule" in English. But today English speakers generally scoff at such absurd and arbitrary rules. Now, while there is no doubt that over time a person like myself begins to conform to certain generally accepted habits of usage, the flexibility of these habits of usage are everywhere to seen. I have had native English speaking professors attempt "incorrectly" to "correct" my grammar, demonstrating in the process that their own understanding of "proper" grammar was flawed at best. And I have taken classes from professors whose command of English was surprisingly minimal. But that didn't stop them from contributing to the educational process.

The conclusion is, I believe, fairly simple. If you want to keep a language growing, promote its beauty, don't enforce its rules. And if you want to promote equality, linguistic elitism will always stand in your way.

sought loans to finance bombing - The Times

The Birmingham-based outfit?s financier made an application for ?20,000 to the payday lender Yes Loans, while he and one of the alleged ringleaders applied to Barclays for loans totalling ?33,000.

Family friend Daniel Kuehnl pauses Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, in Clayton, N.J., as he stands near a memorial shrine for Autumn Pasquale, while announcing funeral arrangements on Saturday, for the missing 12-year-old girl whose body was found in a home's recycling bin. CLAYTON, N.J. (AP) ? Something struck Toni Fiorella whenever she would see a mother from her hometown drop two teenage sons off at the laundromat to do the family's wash. She didn't know them by name, but they were always respectful. Their mother must be on to something, Fiorella thought.

"It's good," she said. "She's making them responsible."

Now, authorities say, those same boys are accused of killing a 12-year-old neighborhood girl and stuffing her body into a recycling bin near their home. Authorities say she was lured with the promise of new parts for the beloved bicycle she was riding before she disappeared.

Some of the 8,000 residents of Clayton saw the boys as Fiorella did, many others as troublesome teens with reputations for stealing bikes. But even some of those who saw a lawless side of the 15- and 17-year-old brothers have a hard time imagining them committing such a violent crime.

Sixteen-year-old Na'eem Williams, who described himself as a close friend of the 15-year-old, said that he knew the brothers to take bicycles but that it was a leap to think them capable of a horrendous crime.

"I know they didn't do nothing like that," he said. "I know they couldn't, especially not with a young girl."

Authorities have not discussed a motive and have not released the names of the brothers because they are charged as juveniles. The Associated Press is withholding them for the same reason.

Deputy Public Defender Jeffrey Wintner said his office was representing both defendants, though a private attorney had been assigned to handle one of the cases. He said the office would have no comment.

The boys were charged Tuesday with first-degree murder in the death of Autumn Pasquale, a well-known and well-liked seventh-grader who disappeared Saturday afternoon in the town 25 miles south of Philadelphia. Her body was found Monday night in the recycling bin behind a vacant house next to the boys' home.

Autumn's mother, Jennifer Cornwell, told reporters Tuesday that she felt as though her daughter had been treated "like a piece of trash" because of where her body was recovered. The girl's father, Anthony Pasquale, a postal worker in Clayton, said he is familiar with the family of the suspects.

"Everybody knows everybody," in the town of 8,000, he said, "whether they're friends or acquaintances."

The boys, who have other brothers who are not charged in the case, were themselves seen at a vigil held Monday night for Autumn. The younger boy apparently exchanged messages with Autumn's teenage brother on Facebook on Sunday.

The brother, A.J. Pasquale, wrote on his page that police, search dogs and the media were involved in the search. "thts good," was the reply from an account that appeared to belong to the 15-year-old suspect.

People who know the boys say the younger suspect is a sophomore at Clayton High School and has been on the wrestling team. The older boy, they say, attends Bankbridge Developmental Center in Sewell, a school for students with social, behavioral and academic problems. He was seen outside the family's home less often, neighbors say.

Beverly Davis said she went to school with Autumn's father and the suspects' mother.

"We are not surprised by who the suspects were," Davis said. "We're not surprised at all. They're not always on the right side of the law."

Davis said one boy stole one of her children's bikes. And the boys' father told the Star-Ledger newspaper of Newark that their sons were known for stealing bikes, and that one son had previously been charged with theft.

Naomi Sampson, 76, said that her family has had a home for a century half a block from the boys' home ? and that the boys' family has lived there about as long. She saw the boys grow up, she said.

"We know they're troubled," she said.

But others who observed the boys found them to act the right way around adults, to smile and be courteous. Fiorella, for example, said she thought it was unusual to see two teenage boys doing laundry.

Authorities say their mother saw something in one of their Facebook postings that gave her cause to call police Monday. It was that call, officials said, that led investigators to the body and her sons.

She has not returned messages from the AP. The boys' father told reporters that he has not seen the boys in a year and has not seen much of them in the past seven years or so.

The teens are due in court Friday for a hearing to determine whether they are to remain in custody. Prosecutors say they may ask that the case be moved to adult court.

Both boys are charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, disposing of a body, tampering with evidence and theft. The younger boy is also charged with luring, allegedly telling Autumn to come over to trade bike parts.

Funeral services for Autumn are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Glassboro, following a public viewing at 8 a.m.

Facebook engagement and mobile search on the rise: report

Tineka Smith Published 22 October 2012

Research reveals that Facebook interactions and overall paid search continues to grow, predominantly from increasing mobile traffic.

According to Adobe's Digital Index report, Facebook brand engagement grew by 896% since Q3 2011.

The report predicts that engagement on the social networking will surge in Q4 2012 as brand investment in social marketing continues to be popular.

Mobile users accounted for almost 25% of all Facebook engagement. Mobile traffic is predicted to steadily grow with one in five paid search clicks coming from a tablet or smartphone. Adobe says that marketers will most likely tailor campaigns for specific mobile operating systems like iOS and Android.

Conversion rates are also becoming more significant because of increasing mobile search traffic growth.

Adobe digital index report
Facebook's average brand post engagement

"Mobile and social continue to play key roles in digital marketing growth," said David Karnstedt, senior vice president of media and advertising solutions at Adobe. "Smart marketers are activating this data; taking advantage of opportunities such as advertising on smartphones and tablets as well as capitalizing on Facebook's platform changes to reach customers in a more personalized way. By strategically adding these elements, marketers exponentially increase their overall ROI and can then accurately attribute value to each channel."

Search advertising remained steady in Q3 2012 but search spending shifted significantly to mobile devices.

According to Adobe, search spending in the U.S. and Europe is expected to continue to rise for Q4 2012 and Q1 2013.
The report predicts increased CPCs (cost per click) and growth rates of 15 to 20% in the U.S. and Europe due to the holiday season and Google shopping's new paid model.

Eurozone debt hits 90 percent of economy's worth

BRUSSELS ? The debt burden of the 17 countries that use the euro rose to 90 percent of the value of its economy at the end of the second quarter, in spite of efforts by many of the countries to cut back on their spending.

The rise reported Wednesday by Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, from the previous quarter's 88.2 percent provides further evidence that stalling economic growth is making it harder for eurozone countries to handle their debts.

The debt problems are getting worse for many euro countries, including Italy, Spain, Ireland and Portugal.

Greece saw the biggest quarterly increase in its debt burden to 150.3 percent of its national income from 136.9 percent. The country's deep recession, which appears headed for a sixth year, is making the debt mountain more burdensome.

Gangs thriving amid political instability, political support: Guardian thumbnail

Political turmoil in the Maldives is fueling gang violence and criminal impunity, reports the UK?s Guardian newspaper.

The gangs are thriving not only because of the drug trade, but due to political parties employing gang members to assault opponents, destroy property, and boost numbers at rallies.

?It?s been a good few months. We?ve been doing well,? one gang leader told Guardian journalist Jason Burke, revealing that the gang had been ?providing political parties with muscle to intimidate opponents, swell meetings and provide security.?

?There?s so much demand, we?ve had to appoint someone just to run that side of our operations. Requests are coming in all the time,? the gang leader told the newspaper.

According to the Guardian?s report, ?Ibrahim?s outfit of more than 70 members works around the clock, trafficking heroin, enforcing its territory and carrying out what he calls ?political work?. Ibrahim asks for MVR 10,000 (US$650) for 10 of his gang members to attend a demonstration for an hour. The rate charged for roughing up a political opponent ? damaging his car or house ? is between MVR 25,000 and MVR 50,000 (US$1650-3250), but for a stabbing the price would be much higher: US$25,000 at least.

?It?s not bad, enough to pay our expenses for a month,? Ibrahim told the paper.

The newspaper noted that corruption meant that ?police officers can easily be persuaded to ?lose? evidence and judges can be bought off. Nor is prison much of a deterrent. Phones, cigarettes, DVDs, ?anything except women? is easily available,? the gang leader informed the paper.

The Guardian?s article echoes the findings of a report into the Maldives? gangs by the Asia Foundation, published last month, which revealed that politicians and businessmen are paying gangs tens of thousands of rufiya to assault rivals, damage property, and in some cases have them killed.

?Political and business elites exploit gangs to carry out a range of illegal activities that serve their political or business interests in exchange for financing the gangs,? stated the report, which collected data through 20 focus groups and 24 in-depth interviews with gang members.

Politicians are described as being involved in symbiotic relationships with gangs, who depend on the gangs to suppress opponents and carry out tasks to help maintain their popularity or to divert media attention from political issues.

?Politicians have asked us to cut the TVM cable for MVR 25,000 (US$1620), to light up a bus for MVR 10,000 (US$650). Also in the recent political riots we were involved in things like burning the garbage collection area,? said one gang member.

?We were given some amount of money, two of us and the 10 people who accompanied us were paid some amount, we had to set fire and run from the spot and be seen in another area. We got paid to do this by a political group. Sometimes in return for the work we do, we also get to party in their safari boats with girls and alcohol,? they added.

In other cases, gang members were paid MVR 20,000 (US$1230) to destroy shop windows. Interviewees also stated that being offered immunity from prosecution was normally part of this deal.

Leaders, who deal directly with the politicians, were reported as earning up to MVR 1 million (US$65,000) a month via such activities.

One member even described instances where murder contracts were handed out.

?We may be given a file with all the information about the person and be told and told we may be paid in millions to carry out the killing,? explained one member.

The gang leader who spoke to the Guardian said that he had made enough money and was now looking for a quieter life: ?I?m not sure where I?ll go. Maybe [Sri] Lanka. Maybe India. Out of here anyway,? he told the paper.

?People around the world [need] to know how things are here. This is a paradise, but not everyone is an angel. Things have gone this far because of politics,? he said.

Roundup: States Raise Employee Insurance Contributions To Save ...

A selection of health policy stories from Minnesota, Texas, California, Florida and Massachusetts.

USA Today: States Rein In Health Insurance Expenses
Financially strapped state and local governments are saving billions of dollars on health insurance by cutting back on free coverage for employees and raising worker contributions, a USA Today analysis finds.? Government workers still enjoy more generous health benefits than privately employed workers but the advantage has narrowed from $1,523 in 2007 to $891 in 2012, adjusted for inflation, federal data show?(Cauchon, 10/23).

MPR: MN To Ask For More Health Exchange Funds
The [Gov. Mark] Dayton administration will seek between $60 million and $80 million more in federal grants to fund a cornerstone of the federal health care overhaul?-- a state insurance exchange. ... Administration officials disclosed the new request during a testy legislative hearing about a previous federal exchange grant of $42 million. ... Republican House Ways and Means Committee Chair Mary Liz Holberg pressed administration officials to say what would happen if lawmakers and the governor can't reach agreement on exchange policies (Stawicki, 10/23).

Minneapolis Star Tribune: Insurers Head To The Malls For Customers
As health reform efforts move toward letting consumers comparison-shop for coverage, insurance companies are diving into the world of retail, starting with low-cost, temporary "pop-up" stores timed to coincide with open-enrollment season. Minnetonka-based UnitedHealthcare earlier this month opened 30 pop-up stores and more than 1,400 kiosks in shopping malls around the country to sign up seniors for its Medicare plans (Crosby, 10/23).

(St. Paul) Pioneer Press: Health Insurers Adding 'Pop-Up' Stores to Malls, Shopping Centers
On Thursday, Oct. 25, Bloomington-based HealthPartners plans to open a temporary store at Ridgedale Center in Minnetonka so shoppers on their way to Jamba Juice or Aeropostale can stop to buy health plans. The opening of the "pop-up" shop helps mark the local arrival of a national trend in which more health insurers are trying to reach customers by selling policies in malls, shopping centers and retail storefronts (Snowbeck, 10/23).

Los Angeles Times: CVS Caremark Has Become A Frequent Subject Of Government Probes
CVS Caremark Corp. is no stranger to government scrutiny. In recent years, the company has paid more than $80 million to resolve allegations of overbilling Medicaid, improperly changing patients' prescriptions and, in one case, using blow dryers to peel off patients' mailing labels to resell returned medicine. Federal authorities say they are reviewing whether the latest allegations, made by pharmacists and consumers in several states, including California, violate any terms of previous settlements with the government (Terhune, 10/24).

The Dallas Morning News: Dallas Commissioners Likely To OK Health-Care Subsidy For Workers With Domestic Partners
A slim majority of the Dallas County Commissioners Court said Tuesday morning that they support offering employees with domestic partners a subsidy to help them pay for health insurance. County Judge Clay Jenkins and his two Democratic colleagues, Commissioners John Wiley Price and Elba Garcia, said they support the proposal, which is expected to cost no more than $100,000 per year. They said it was the right thing to do for employees and something that is needed for the county to be able to attract and retain quality workers (Krause, 10/23).

HealthyCal:?Lack Of Dental Care Assistance Puts Patients, Hospitals In Painful Cycle
Dr. Jeffery Luzar will see up to fifteen patients a day in the Puente a la Salud Mobile Community Clinic, an auxiliary facility belonging to St. Joseph's Hospital in Orange that provides dental services. Luzar has served the indigent population since starting his dental practice in 1997 and has watched their situation grow dire over the years. ... The most recent survey by Pew, conducted in 2007, showed 8 percent of the 83,000 Californians who visited emergency rooms for preventable dental conditions returned to the emergency room within a year?(Afrasiabi, 10/24).

The Texas Tribune: Report: More Funding Needed For Juvenile Mental Health
State juvenile facilities for girls are failing to provide adequate mental health support for victims of trauma, according to a report released Wednesday by the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition. To address such needs, the coalition recommends implementing more "trauma-informed programs" and increasing funding for programs that "keep youth in their home counties" (Chammah, 10/24).

California Healthline: Premium Reduction Approved For State High-Risk Coverage
Change is coming for the 5,823 current enrollees in California's Major Risk Medical Insurance Program, and it's change they're going to feel in their pockets. Premium rates are about to go down to match the rates paid in the similar federal program, the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan. ...?the new rate goes into effect Jan. 1 and will remain in effect for the 2013 calendar year. It sets a premium rate that is 100 percent of the commercial rate charged for insurable people, instead of the 125 percent rate that has been previously charged?(Gorn, 10/24).

Stateline/Kaiser Health News: Oklahoma Looks for Ways to Keep Mentally Ill Ex-offenders Out of Prison?
Shawna Gordon isn?t alone in worrying what will happen on that day in the future when she ventures beyond the familiar barbed wire that circumscribes her existence now. ...?Because Gordon suffers from schizophrenia, she is eligible for counseling and life-management services as well as money for housing, clothing and food that Oklahoma offers to keep mentally ill ex-cons stable and less likely to return to prison. Central to that program is ensuring that participants leave custody already signed up for Social Security Disability and Medicaid (Ollove, 10/23).

Health News Florida: Florida Rate Of Uninsured Children Dips Below 12%
Florida is making great progress in getting children enrolled in health insurance, according to a report released Tuesday. But the authors warn the trend could stall if the state rejects Medicaid expansion. Between 2009 and 2011, despite the bad economy, Florida was able to reduce the number of uninsured children by 125,000, according to the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute?s Center for Children and Families (Gentry, 10/23).

The Boston Globe: American Express OPEN Survey: Massachusetts Small Business Owners Are More Upbeat Than National Counterparts
Thanks partly to the Bay State economy?s reliance on health care and education, Massachusetts-based small business owners seem to be more optimistic about economic issues than their national counterparts, suggests the recently released American Express OPEN Small Business Monitor, which looks to take the temperature of the small business climate twice a year (Reidy, 10/23).

(St. Paul) Pioneer Press: Minnesota To Get $4.5M From Abbott Lab
The state of Minnesota will receive about $4.5 million from Illinois-based Abbott Laboratories as part of a national health care fraud settlement, the Minnesota Department of Human Services announced Tuesday, Oct. 23. The settlement calls on Abbott to pay $9 million related to the use of a drug called Depakote by patients in the state's public health insurance programs, including Medicaid. The sum will be split between the state and federal government (Snowbeck, 10/23).

Job change can change friendship ? The Outer Banks Voice

Dear Kathleen,
I had a good friend at work and for years we had lunch together almost every week. But six months ago, I took a new job at another company and now we have virtually no contact. I feel let down and hurt. What happened?
? Confused

Dear Confused,
I?m assuming that there was no falling out, conflict, or other reason that your communication and connection has fizzled out. If that is the case, it may be that you interpreted your friendship as being more than it was.

Having lunch together with a co-worker is a transactional friendship. That means that the relationship is determined by some external circumstance. You can think of these folks as ?friends for a season or a reason.? Most of us have many of these kinds of relationships.

Our lives may be enriched by our connections with the mother of the child that our kid plays soccer with, or the guys who meet at the beach to surf every Saturday. We may feel close to these people, but unless the relationship moves to a deeper level, we are likely to find them absent from our lives once our daughter no longer wants to play soccer, or our ?friend? gives up surfing to take up golf.

Once the season or reason is no longer viable, the relationship ends. This can be very disappointing, if we expected more.

Real friends?those people attached to our hearts, those who Aristotle was referring to when he said, ?A friend is a single soul dwelling in two bodies??are connected in a way that transcends the circumstances that originally brought them together.

Richness, depth, and true intimacy (which I define as ?knowing and being known?) are hallmarks of friendships that will go the distance. These friendships are fundamentally different relationships from the more casual ones we have with people who we just happen to come in contact with during the course of our personal or professional lives.

One way of measuring a friendship?of knowing whether someone is a ?friend for a reason or season? or is really attached to our hearts?is to look at the ?out-of-context? interactions that you have. True friends get together in a variety of circumstances, in good times and bad.

Your relationship would be strengthened if you included that fellow soccer mom and her family in your Fourth of July cookout, or you invited your surfing buddies to your wedding.

Deepening friendships beyond the original reason for connecting is important for a number of reasons.

There is an old Chinese saying that goes, ?We will often forget those we have laughed with. We will never forget those we have cried with.? Think about people who have been there for you when you really needed support.

Life difficulties offer ample opportunities for our casual friends to transform from ?Sally who works in the next cubicle,? into ?Sally who came to my mother?s funeral and called to see how I was doing.? Sally is no longer just a co-worker, but is now a real friend who has shared an important time in your life.

If this old ?friend? from work really means something to you, I suggest getting in touch with her and telling her just that.

Let her know that you miss your time together and that you would like to continue to have her in your life even though the circumstances have changed.

You may discover that she misses you as well. Then, invest time and energy in your relationship. Set up a lunch date or another time to get together.

And, don?t fall prey to the common idea that ?I don?t have enough time.?

We?re all busy, of course, but we live happier and richer lives when we act on our priorities, and nurture the relationships that are important to us.

Recipe: Double Spinach Pasta Casserole with Pesto & Asiago ...

2012_10_16-DSC_9730-2.jpgPasta casseroles are perhaps the ultimate combination of weeknight convenience and homey comfort food. Casseroles like this one don't take long to cook, and they can be put together the day before and baked or warmed up at the end of a long day. And yet these pasta bakes are comforting and delicious. This one has a double dose of spinach, spoonfuls of pesto, and, yes, plenty of cheese. It's a whole meal in one dish.

2012_10_14-DSC_9683.jpgI really love spinach in pasta, and this one picks up spinach and runs with it. I start with spinach pasta, green and hearty, and toss it with fresh baby spinach, shallots, and garlic. If you would like to add some meat, stir in finely chopped chicken breast (no need to cook it first; it will cook through in the oven as the casserole bakes). The whole casserole is bound together with a creamy mix of yogurt, eggs, pesto, and a bit of cream.

The best thing, though, about this particular casserole is that it is sized down. Most pasta casseroles are designed for a big household or nights of leftovers. This one is baked in a 9x9 square dish and will make enough to feed a couple people dinner plus lunch leftovers. If you want more, just double it and put it in a 9x13-inch dish.

Double Spinach Pasta Casserole with Pesto & Asiago Cheese

Serves 4

12 ounces spinach pasta
5 ounces fresh baby spinach, roughly chopped, about 5 cups
2 large shallots, peeled and chopped
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 ounces Asiago cheese, grated
4 ounces raw chicken breast, finely chopped, optional
1/2 cup low-fat Greek yogurt
1/2 cup cream
1/2 cup basil pesto, homemade or jarred
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 large eggs
Olive oil

Heat the oven to 350?F and lightly grease an 8x8 or 9x9-inch square baking dish with olive oil or baking spray. Bring a large pot of salted water to boil over high heat and add the spinach pasta. Cook according to package instructions, drain, and set aside.

While the pasta is cooking, in a large bowl toss together the chopped spinach, shallots, and garlic. Toss with the Asiago cheese and the chicken breast, if using.

In a separate bowl whisk together the yogurt, cream, and pesto. Taste and add salt as desired, depending on the saltiness of the pesto. Stir in a generous quantity black pepper. Whisk in the eggs.

Stir the cooked pasta together with the spinach and shallot, then pour in the sauce and toss to coat. Spread in the prepared baking dish. (At this point the casserole can be covered and refrigerated overnight.)

Bake for 30 minutes or until golden-brown on top and lightly bubbling.

Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes then serve with a salad, like a colorful cabbage slaw, or roasted vegetables.

Iran's president barred from visiting prison

(AP) ? Iran's state prosecutor says he has denied permission to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to visit an imprisoned advisor, a further sign of the Iranian president's rapidly waning influence.

Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehi is quoted by the press as saying that Ahmadinejad's request to visit Evin prison is suspected to be politically motivated.

Ahmadinejad demanded to visit Evin after his top press advisor Ali Akbar Javanfekr was jailed last month after being convicted of publishing material deemed insulting to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Ahmadinejad once had the backing of Iran's clerical establishment but lost it when he was perceived to challenge Khamenei last year.

Ejehi said the president would do better to work on Iran's deepening economic problems that to visit Evin.

His remarks were published in several Iranian newspapers Monday.

New York court date in Lindsay Lohan car accident case cancelled

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Embattled actress Lindsay Lohan appears to be off the hook after being arrested for leaving the scene of an accident last month when her Porsche allegedly clipped a pedestrian in an alley behind an upscale Manhattan hotel.

New York prosecutors said Lohan's scheduled court appearance on Tuesday had been canceled. No future court date was scheduled, an indication the district attorney has decided not to move forward with the case.

"Apparently prosecutors agreed that there wasn't enough to proceed." said Lohan's spokesman, Steve Honig. "This turned out to be nothing just like we said from the very beginning."

The 26-year-old actress, who has been in and out of court, rehab and prison since a 2007 drunk driving arrest in Los Angeles, was charged on September 19 with a misdemeanor after a man said he had been hit by the actress' car behind the Dream hotel.

Police issued Lohan a ticket with a court date of October 23.

A spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office declined to comment on why the case against the "Mean Girls" actress was not moving ahead.

A week after the incident in New York, Lohan reportedly got into a public spat with a man who she said refused to delete pictures he had taken of her from his phone. She claimed the man assaulted her, but charges were later dropped.

Earlier this month, police on Long Island responded to an early-morning 911 call about a verbal dispute involving Lohan and her mother, Dina, but made no arrests, a spokeswoman for the Nassau County police said.

Lohan remains on probation in California until 2014 in connection with a jewelry theft case.

MAKING A STATEMENT

Even better than the Bear.

Alabama is No. 1 in the AP poll for the eighth straight week, the longest run atop the rankings in the history of the storied program.

The Tide has twice previously been No. 1 for seven consecutive weeks ? in 1979 when Bear Bryant coached 'Bama to his last national title and in 1980 when the Tide finished sixth.

Nick Saban's Tide is working on trying to win its third national title in the last four seasons.

Alabama's latest No. 1 ranking came with just the slightest smudge. The Tide received 59 of 60 first-place votes after being a unanimous top pick for the last three weeks.

Oregon is No. 2 for the fifth consecutive week, though the gap between the Ducks and No. 3 Florida narrowed after the Gators beat South Carolina 44-11 on Saturday.

Florida was so good it persuaded one voter to give the Gators a first-place vote. And why not?

To this point, Florida has played a tougher schedule than both the Tide and Ducks, and dominating a good South Carolina team ? albeit without producing much offense ? was enough for Doug Lesmerises of The Plain Dealer in Cleveland to make the switch.

"That gave the Gators three wins over very good opponents, while Alabama still has that opening win over Michigan and then blowouts of lesser teams," he wrote in a blog post.

Alabama is about to enter the difficult part of its schedule. The Tide is home against unbeaten and No. 13 Mississippi State on Saturday. The next week is the latest installment of Alabama's Game of the Century series with LSU. After that, No. 22 Texas A&M comes to Tuscaloosa.

South Carolina was the only team ranked in the top 16 last week to lose Saturday, so the top half of the latest poll only had minor adjustments.

Kansas State stayed at No. 4 after beating West Virginia 55-14. Notre Dame is No. 5 after a 17-14 victory against BYU and LSU remained sixth with a 24-19 victory at Texas A&M.

South Carolina dropped from ninth to No. 17.

___

MOVING UP

Seems like a long time ago that Oklahoma lost at home to Kansas State and tumbled out of the top 10.

The Sooners have been making steady progress since, working back to No. 8 this week after pounding Kansas 52-7. Oklahoma has outscored its last three opponents 156-48. Safety Tony Jefferson has led a defense that hasn't allowed a point over the last two weeks with the first unit on the field and Damien Williams has provide a big-play threat at running back.

Texas Tech, Texas and the Jayhawks are not exactly murderers' row, but the Sooners have restored some order in Norman and gotten themselves back to the fringe of the national title picture.

They can dive deeper into it Saturday when Notre Dame comes to town, but the Sooners still need plenty of help ? in the form of two Kansas State losses ? to even have a chance of winning the Big 12.

___

MOVING DOWN

From No. 5 to No. 25 in two weeks.

Quarterback Geno Smith and the Mountaineers were fifth in the Top 25 after winning at Texas, then fell flat 49-14 against Texas Tech and slipped to No. 17.

A second straight lopsided loss ? this time to Kansas State ? dropped the Mountaineers (5-2) another eight spots.

Their defense has been a mess, and now the offense can't keep up.

"I'm not going to sit here and point fingers at anyone else," Smith said after a deflating night in Morgantown.

After two losses by a combined 76 points ? coincidentally the same amount of points they received in the poll ? should the Mountaineers be ranked at all? It's a fair question. Working in their favor is no team in the Top 25 has faced opponents with a better winning percentage than West Virginia's, who are 33-15 (.686).

Still, Toledo (7-1), which finished first among the others receiving votes with 49 points, has a reasonable gripe.

The Rockets handed Cincinnati its first loss on Saturday at the Glass Bowl in Toledo, and their only loss was in overtime at Arizona.

___

IN AND OUT

Cincinnati was the only team to fall out of rankings this week, a stiff penalty for its first loss.

The Bearcats didn't get much leeway from voters probably because they had played such a weak schedule. Cincinnati's one "big" win came against Virginia Tech. The Bearcats rallied with a late touchdown to beat the Hokies 27-24, but Virginia Tech is 4-4 after getting roughed up by Clemson on Saturday.

Cincinnati's other victories were against Pittsburgh, Miami, Ohio, and two FCS teams.

The Bearcats, though, could be back in the rankings soon. They play at No. 16 Louisville in a Friday night Big East game.

Those road trips to Mid-American Conference opponents have been tricky for the Big East. Earlier this season, South Florida lost at Ball State and Connecticut lost to Western Michigan.

Re-entering the rankings this week is Louisiana Tech. The nation's highest-scoring team beat Idaho 70-28. The Bulldogs had 839 yards, the most by an FBS team in game this season.

___

FROM THE ARCHIVES

Oregon State moved up one spot to No. 7 and stayed unbeaten with a 21-7 victory over Utah.

The only other time the Beavers and Ducks have both been ranked in the top seven was the final poll of the 2000 season. Oregon State finished fourth and Oregon seventh.

___

ODDS AND ENDS

No. 9 Ohio State dropped two spots after needing a late rally and overtime to beat Purdue at home. The unbeaten Buckeyes go to Penn State, where the Nittany Lions have won five straight. Neither team is eligible for the postseason. ... Florida plays No. 12 Georgia in their annual rivalry game at Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday with the SEC East on the line. If the Gators win, they clinch the division and a spot in the conference title game. If Georgia wins, it only needs to beat Ole Miss and Auburn to win a second straight East division. ... No. 21 Boise State (Mountain West), No. 23 Ohio (MAC) and Louisiana Tech (Western Athletic Conference) give the conferences without BCS automatic qualifying bids three ranked teams, one less than the ACC and Big Ten combined.
