Today, the education of students with disabilities appears to be ?everybody?s business.? In an era of inclusion and collaboration, educators on all levels need information about the myriad of ways in which technology can enhance the performance capabilities of these students, facilitate participation in instructional activities, and improve scholastic achievement.
Technology can support much of the effort toward curriculum access, participation and progress. Technology increases independence, personal productivity and empowerment. It can facilitate the kinds of interactions that support instruction, and it can transform static curriculum resources into flexible digital media and tools.
It is amazing to see how a group of 17 moderate/severe special education students from 1st to 6th grade are developing their language and literacy skills with such engaging instruction. Our students have the opportunity to put on earphones and independently utilize their own laptop computers. With the help of Imagine Learning our students are given differentiated instruction, strategic re-teaching, and most of all, our students are succeeding at their own level.
Increasingly, the education of all students, including those with disabilities, is a local and a shared responsibility. As a teacher, it is very rewarding to see our students engage in the learning process. Thank you Noemi Salcedo, Susy Chavez, and the Imperial Beach Charter School family, for providing this great learning opportunity for our moderate/severe special education students. This is just the beginning of a great journey.
