Launching An Internet Communication Satellite | WildBlue Satellite ...

Since its beginnings in 1986, ViaSat has continued to grow and be profitable almost since the first year of operation. However, the

company recently took a major step by launching its own $400 million satellite in order to solidify its place among the internet communication leaders.? This new satellite known as ViaSat-1, will eventually be joined by ViaSat-2 and provide a way for just about everyone to receive broadband satellite internet as well as other services.

ViaSat-1 was successfully launched on October 19, 2011 from pad 39 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan.? ViaSat-1 is the highest capacity ka satellite ever to be launched and is also designed to transform satellite internet as we know it.? This means providing customers whith faster and more reliable broadband satellite internet than ever before.? As a result, the launch of ViaSat-1 is expected to accelerate growth in the demand for broadband satellite service over the next decade.

The chairman and CEO of ViaSat, Mark Dankberg, says that the launch of this satellite marks the result of a team effort brought forth by all two thousand plus employees at the company and will give a big boost to the industry which has been needed for years.

So far, all has gone well with the launch and deployment of the satellite and ViaSat was set to begin offering Exede Broadband Satellite Service in early January.? This will be followed by the opportunity to bundle both satellite internet and satellite television hopefully in the near future.? However, getting a $400 million satellite into orbit is no easy task.? After launch, it first had to separate from its launch vehicle and have its signal acquired on the ground.? Following this step, it was finally raised into a geosynchronous orbit ten days after launch.? This means that the satellite will remain in the same position relative to the earth below at one hundred fifteen degrees west.? In order to achieve this orbit, the satellite is approximately 22,500 miles above the earth?s surface.? After reaching its geosynchronous orbit, the bird had to deploy antenna reflectors and then complete sixty days of in-orbit testing.? Once this was completed to a satisfactory manner, the satellite was officially handed over from SS/L to ViaSat and has now been positioned in its final home.

ViaSat-1 includes a high capacity Ka band spot beam which will make better use of the newest technology than the old Ku band which is still in operation with many other satellite internet providers.? However, this newer band will allow for almost complete coverage of North America.? As a result, ViaSat will be able to provide satellite internet service to just about anyone and hopes that the service proves so popular it will eventually challenge DSL and cable in urban areas as well as being the popular internet choice for those who live in rural regions.?? It will be interesting to see how ViaSat is able to revolutionize the world of broadband satellite internet in the years to come.
