SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Actress Cynthia Nixon is trying to clarify her earlier remarks that got her in hot water with some fellow gay rights activists.

The "Sex and the City" star's personal life became an exercise in the politics of sexual orientation last week when The New York Times Magazine quoted Nixon saying that for her, being gay was a conscious choice. Nixon has been in a relationship with a woman for eight years. Before that, she spent 15 years and had two children with a man.

After some gay rights activists complained that Nixon's remarks could be used to deny a biological basis for homosexuality, the actress on Monday released a statement to The Advocate magazine explaining she is technically bisexual, and not by choice.

Nixon told the magazine: "What I have 'chosen' is to be in a gay relationship."

Cuba's Communists map out party future (AP)

HAVANA ? Cuba's Communist leaders vowed not to cede any ground to "the enemy," even as they pledged to fight corruption and continue overhauling the island's listing Marxist economy with an injection of free market reform.

No word of long-awaited political changes ? including an April pledge by President Raul Castro to implement term limits ? seeped out of the first day of the closed-door party conference. Nor was there any hint of changes to the aged upper ranks of the party hierarchy. President Raul Castro is 80, and his two top deputies are 81 and 79, respectively.

Castro has spoken of the need to revitalize the island's leadership, but has complained there are few young leaders ready to step up. He, or his now-retired brother Fidel, have ruled the country since their 1959 revolution.

"Making the necessary changes, but without the smallest concession to the enemy," read the headline in Sunday's official Juventud Rebelde newspaper, an apparent reference to the United States and other government opponents.

The theme was echoed by delegates at the conference in snippets of the session shown on state television

"The enemy is waiting to create internal problems for us," Angel Bueno warned fellow attendees.

Raul Castro was to address the delegates in a closing speech Sunday, according to state-run website Cubadebate, though it was not clear if his words would be televised or rebroadcast at some point. Attendees did pledge to boost the ranks of women, Afro-Cubans and young people in the party and government, and noted that women currently make up 37 percent of the government, and 41 percent of delegates to the island's National Assembly.

But there were no concrete resolutions, and Castro's recent comments not to expect fireworks out of the internal meetings dampened expectations any major announcements were coming.

The meetings are a follow-up to last April's historic party summit, which opened up long-shut doors of economic opportunity by green-lighting the legalization of home and car sales, expansion of private-sector activity and extension of loans to support farmers, entrepreneurs and homeowners.

Foreign journalists were not allowed access to the weekend event.

State-run website Cubadebate showed photos of Castro presiding over the conference wearing a gray blazer and a dark, open-collar shirt, with what appeared to be a small bandage on the tip of his nose. There was no word of any appearance by Fidel Castro, who was greeted with a standing ovation and some tears at the April congress.

In a brief snippet of video posted on Cubadebate, Vice President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura said in a keynote speech that the conference would focus on "the everyday work of the organization."

Apple announces Q1 earnings, sets quarterly record with $46.33 billion in revenue

Apple Store Grand Central
It's that time folks: time for the quarterly running of the spreadsheets. Today Apple, one the most anticipated of all, is revealing its earnings for the past three months and let's just say things are lookin' pretty good for the Cupertino crew. The company set a new record for quarterly revenue and profit in Q1 of 2012, netting $46.33 billion in total with $13.06 billion earnings -- the latter number representing about half of the company's annual profit. That's nearly twice what Apple announced for the same (at the time record-setting) period last year -- $26.74 billion and $6 billion, respectively. In total the company shipped 15.4 million iPads, 15.4 million iPods and 5.2 million Macs this quarter. That last number is particularly surprising since it represents a growth of 26 percent over last year, bucking trends that indicated PC growth would remain flat.

Perhaps more importantly, though, the company sold just over 37 million iPhones -- a 128 percent increase over the same quarter last year and greatly exceeding industry estimates. This also moves Apple back into the number one slot, ahead of Samsung which sold a stunning 35 million units this last quarter. Sales of iPhones and accessories accounted for 24.4 billion of the quarter's revenue. Apple also anticipates to have a strong Q2, though maybe not a record-breaking one, thanks to "some amazing new products in the pipeline." But even if Q2 turns out to be a slow one, Cupertino should be perfectly fine thanks to its $97 billion in cash on hand. Check out the complete PR after the break.

Magic mushrooms' effects illuminated in brain imaging studies

ScienceDaily (Jan. 23, 2012) ? Brain scans of people under the influence of the psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, have given scientists the most detailed picture to date of how psychedelic drugs work. The findings of two studies being published in scientific journals this week identify areas of the brain where activity is suppressed by psilocybin and suggest that it helps people to experience memories more vividly.

In the first study, published January 23 in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), 30 healthy volunteers had psilocybin infused into their blood while inside magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners, which measure changes in brain activity. The scans showed that activity decreased in "hub" regions of the brain -- areas that are especially well-connected with other areas.

The second study, due to be published online by the British Journal of Psychiatry on January 24, found that psilocybin enhanced volunteers' recollections of personal memories, which the researchers suggest could make it useful as an adjunct to psychotherapy.

Professor David Nutt, from the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, the senior author of both studies, said: "Psychedelics are thought of as 'mind-expanding' drugs so it has commonly been assumed that they work by increasing brain activity, but surprisingly, we found that psilocybin actually caused activity to decrease in areas that have the densest connections with other areas. These hubs constrain our experience of the world and keep it orderly. We now know that deactivating these regions leads to a state in which the world is experienced as strange."

The intensity of the effects reported by the participants, including visions of geometric patterns, unusual bodily sensations and altered sense of space and time, correlated with a decrease in oxygenation and blood flow in certain parts of the brain.

The function of these areas, the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), is the subject of debate among neuroscientists, but the PCC is proposed to have a role in consciousness and self-identity. The mPFC is known to be hyperactive in depression, so psilocybin's action on this area could be responsible for some antidepressant effects that have been reported. Similarly, psilocybin reduced blood flow in the hypothalamus, where blood flow is increased during cluster headaches, perhaps explaining why some sufferers have said symptoms improved under psilocybin.

In the British Journal of Psychiatry study 10 volunteers viewed written cues that prompted them to think about memories associated with strong positive emotions while inside the brain scanner. The participants rated their recollections as being more vivid after taking psilocybin compared with a placebo, and with psilocybin there was increased activity in areas of the brain that process vision and other sensory information.

Participants were also asked to rate changes in their emotional wellbeing two weeks after taking the psilocybin and placebo. Their ratings of memory vividness under the drug showed a significant positive correlation with their wellbeing two weeks afterwards. In a previous study of 12 people in 2011, researchers found that people with anxiety who were given a single psilocybin treatment had decreased depression scores six months later.

Dr Robin Carhart-Harris, from the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, the first author of both papers, said: "Psilocybin was used extensively in psychotherapy in the 1950s, but the biological rationale for its use has not been properly investigated until now. Our findings support the idea that psilocybin facilitates access to personal memories and emotions.

"Previous studies have suggested that psilocybin can improve people's sense of emotional wellbeing and even reduce depression in people with anxiety. This is consistent with our finding that psilocybin decreases mPFC activity, as many effective depression treatments do. The effects need to be investigated further, and ours was only a small study, but we are interested in exploring psilocybin's potential as a therapeutic tool."

The researchers acknowledged that because the participants in this study had volunteered after having previous experience of psychedelics, they may have held prior assumptions about the drugs which could have contributed to the positive memory rating and the reports of improved wellbeing in the follow-up.

Functional MRI measures brain activity indirectly by mapping blood flow or the oxygen levels in the blood. When an area becomes more active, it uses more glucose, but generates energy in rapid chemical reactions that do not use oxygen. Consequently, blood flow increases but oxygen consumption does not, resulting in a higher concentration of oxygen in blood in the local veins.

In the PNAS study, the volunteers were split into two groups, each studied using a different type of fMRI: 15 were scanned using arterial spin labelling (ASL) perfusion fMRI, which measures blood flow, and 15 using blood-oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) fMRI. The two modalities produced similar results, strongly suggesting that the observed effects were genuine.

The studies were carried out with a Home Office licence for storing and handling a schedule 1 drug and were approved by NHS research ethics committees. All the volunteers were mentally and physically healthy and had taken hallucinogenic drugs previously without any adverse response. The research involved scientists from Imperial, the University of Bristol and Cardiff University and was funded by the Beckley Foundation, the Neuropsychoanalysis Foundation, Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, and the Heffter Research Institute.

Highlights: Comments from euro zone finance ministers' talks (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Euro zone finance ministers and officials met in Brussels to discuss terms of a Greek debt restructuring as part of a second bailout package for Athens and rejected an offer made by private bondholders to help restructure those debts, officials said, sending negotiators back to the drawing board.

Following are comments after their talks:

EUROGROUP PRESIDENT JEAN-CLAUDE JUNCKER

ON COUPON ON NEW GREEK BONDS:

"Ministers were asking their Greek colleagues to pursue negotiations to bring the interest rates on the new bonds to below 4 percent for the total period, which implies that the interest comes down to well below 3.5 percent before 2020."

ON COMBINED CAPACITY OF TEMPORARY AND PERMANENT BAILOUT

FUNDS:

"We will reassess the adequacy of the overall lending ceiling of the EFSF and the ESM of 500 billion (euros) ($644 billion) in March of this year."

ON AGREEING A FISCAL COMPACT:

"We have had an extremely constructive meeting on the fiscal compact and this text is a good basis for the discussions for the heads of government at the end of the month. Our aim is that the treaty is signed by the beginning of March."

"This treaty will help us to ensure fiscal sustainability in the euro area. Member states will implement a balanced budget rule in a binding manner in their national legislation."

ON BONDHOLDER LOSSES ON GREEK DEBT:

"We reviewed the process of the consultations on the PSI (private sector involvement) operation between the Greek government and the IIF-led creditor group as well as the discussions in Athens between the troika and the Greek government on the new adjustment program.

"We welcome the increased convergence and ask the Greek government to reach in the next few days a common understanding on the main terms and conditions of the PSI offer, while respecting the main parameters and objectives set by the euro summit on the October 26."

"PSI should secure the decline of the Greek debt-to-GDP ratio with an objective of reaching 120 percent by 2020. This should take place by a voluntary bond exchange with a nominal discount of 50 pct on notional Greek debt held by private investors.

"In parallel we call on the Greek government and the (EU-IMF) troika to agree on the key parameters of an ambitious new adjustment program as soon as possible.

"Let me make it crystal clear -- there are absolutely no divergences of view on this matter around the table: for everyone of us the future of Greece is clearly within the euro area."

ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER AND ECONOMY MINISTER MARIO MONTI

ON THE ESM PERMANENT BAILOUT FUND -- ASKED IF THE TREATY WAS

READY:

"The treaty is still to be finalized."

ON THE SITUATION IN ITALY AND THE DEREGULATION PACKAGE:

"What we have done and are doing was really appreciated. On Italy everything went really well."

EUROPEAN FINANCIAL STABILITY FACILITY (EFSF) CEO KLAUS

REGLING

ON S&P DOWNGRADE OF EFSF RATING:

"The market reaction to the downgrade by S&P has been limited... The fact that the downgrade to AA+ happened by only one rating agency means it will not reduce the EFSF lending capacity of overall 440 billion euros, and that means the EFSF has sufficient means to fulfill its commitments on the current and future potential adjustment programs, until the ESM becomes operation in July this year.

"Consequently there was no need today to take any decisions in the Eurogroup."

ON EFSF LEVERAGE:

"The S&P rating action on EFSF will also not affect the EFSF's capacity to leverage its resources. Leverage of three or more (times) is possible and is confirmed in our talks with investors. On this leveraging, I can tell you that we have made substantial progress in our work.

"You remember that there are two potential options that we want to use to leverage the resources. Option one - the partial risk protection. This will be available by the end of the month. This has been incorporated in the form of an SPV in early January.

"The option two is the co-investment fund (CIF). Here also the structure was incorporated last week, on January 19. The CIF will be available soon. At least the two-tranche structure of this CIF, this two-tier structure means there will be a first-loss tranche from the ESM and the second tranche from an investor, this structure will be ready soon.

"And we have been discussing with a number of investors to operate the two-tranche structure. In that context we have received a good positive feedback on this option from investors outside Europe and a first wave of commitments amounting to about 60 billion euros, we have obtained that. Therefore I am confident that the scheme when needed can be launched and will attract substantial funds."

Dalglish demands response in cup semi vs. City

By STUART CONDIE

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:23 a.m. ET Jan. 23, 2012

LONDON (AP) -Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish wants a determined response from the players he lambasted for their weekend performances when his team takes on Manchester City on Wednesday for a place in the League Cup final.

Dalglish tore into his players after Saturday's woeful 3-1 loss at relegation-threatened Bolton and demanded a much improved display in the semifinals at Anfield.

With the club just one step away from a first final of any kind since the 2007 Champions League, Dalglish said his players were distracted by the match against City. Now they have the chance to show it was worth it.

"I was annoyed and disappointed, more so about the attitude, the commitment and the approach to the game," Dalglish said. "That wasn't us. All season we've been very complimentary about the way the boys have gone about their work but I don't think you could say that on Saturday. Their approach to the game was poor.

"Whether they had their minds on the next two games, I don't know. But every game we play is a very important game."

Liverpool leads City 1-0 from the first leg and the Anfield crowd is set to be in full voice for the visit of the Premier League leaders.

"Now we will get our minds on the Man City game," Dalglish said. "We have to solve our own problems. What do we do to put it right? Same as we always do: we work."

City is on a high after a dramatic 3-2 win over Tottenham on Sunday, but manager Roberto Mancini is keen for his players to forget about the Premier League for a couple of days and focus on what would be a second cup final in two seasons.

Although City looks to have nudged Spurs out of the title race, Mancini believes his team can further improve.

"His words in the dressing room were very profound," assistant manager David Platt said. "Regardless of the fact that it is a great victory against someone who is up there as well, he is not happy at the gift of a goal and the lapse in concentration to allow it to go in.

"He has made that clear in no uncertain terms."

In the other semifinal, Crystal Palace leads second-tier rival Cardiff 1-0 ahead of their second-leg match on Tuesday.

Cardiff, which is third in the League Championship and challenging for promotion, got a taste of cup final action when the Welsh side lost 1-0 to Portsmouth in the 2008 FA Cup final.

The players want another.

"All of the lads know how much it would mean and we're going to drive on together to try and reach Wembley," Cardiff captain Mark Hudson told the club's website. "We're fully focused on what we need to do and we're going out there to play with freedom and get the result."

Amazon setting up first "fulfillment center" in India (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Amazon.com Inc is setting up its first "fulfillment center" in India as the world's largest Internet retailer tries to break into the world's second most-populous nation.

Fulfillment centers are giant warehouses that help Amazon and other online retailers store many products, ship them and handle returns quickly.

The fulfillment center is based in Mumbai, the biggest city in the country, according to job listings on Amazon's India careers website.

Amazon "has an immediate opening for an IT Manager in our first Fulfillment Center based out in Mumbai, India," one recent listing said.

Another recent Amazon job posting sought a "Stations Operations Manager" to work for the fulfillment center team in Mumbai.

Amazon was also recently looking for a financial analyst in Mumbai to report to a general manager and controller and help the fulfillment center operate more efficiently and predictably.

Amazon spent heavily last year setting up more than 10 new fulfillment centers in the United States. The company also lists fulfillment centers in China, Germany, Japan and the U.K. on its website, but currently lists none in India.

Fulfillment centers cost a lot to set up, so Amazon's efforts to start one in India signals the company is serious about getting into the country's $550 billion retail market.

"While it has been speculated that Amazon would be expanding internationally, it seems that the international expansion plans have been accelerating," said Ben Schachter, an analyst at Macquarie. "Last year, they launched a country-specific site in Spain and now it looks like India could be next."

An Amazon spokeswoman did not respond to emails seeking comment on the company's plans for India.

Amazon has software development centers in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad and a customer-service center in Hyderabad.

Shoppers in India can also buy products from Amazon websites in other countries and have the items shipped to them. But the company does not have a dedicated online retail business in India yet.

That has allowed e-commerce start-ups, led by Flipkart, to expand quickly in India.

"India is a tremendously large potential market for Amazon," said Mahesh Murthy, a venture capital investor in India and founder of digital marketing start-up Pinstorm.

"In fact, from the metrics we see, Amazon currently gets more traffic from India than Flipkart does, even though the former has no formal presence in India," he added.

Amazon already does a lot of business in India through its U.K. website, amazon.co.uk, because the company offers free shipping and handles customs for all books, music and DVDs bought from that site and shipped to India, Murthy said.

"But this would be significantly smaller than what Amazon could do if it came with a full offering into India," he added.

Los Angeles mandates porn stars wear condoms (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Porn stars in Los Angeles will be legally required to wear condoms during film shoots after the city council voted on Tuesday to mandate their use, despite a threat by skin flick producers to leave town over the requirement.

The move comes amid persistent questions about how to enforce the health measure, which backers say will protect performers in the multibillion-dollar porn industry from contracting HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Producers complain the sight of a condom in a sex scene turns off consumers of their videos.

The Los Angeles City Council voted 9-1 on Tuesday to give final approval to the measure, proposed after the AIDS Healthcare Foundation qualified an initiative for the ballot that would have asked voters in June to mandate condoms at porn shoots as a condition of obtaining film permits.

The city would have had to spend over $4 million to hold the election, and city officials said a decision to simply adopt the condom requirement allowed them to dodge that costly poll.

Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz, who brought the measure, said he expected residents at the ballot box would have overwhelmingly approved the condom requirement, so it was a "no-brainer" to adopt it now.

"For us right now, our only real policy issue is do we spend $4 million and have this become law? Or do we not spend $4 million and have this become law?" Koretz said.

The council gave preliminary approval to the measure last week, and its passage made the city the first in the nation to impose such a requirement. Most of the U.S. porn industry is based in Los Angeles.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal-OSHA) already requires porn performers to wear barriers, such as condoms, when they are in contact with bodily fluids.

But enforcement has been a challenge for the state. For one, the Cal-OSHA requirement is not specifically aimed at adult films, and it is openly violated within the industry, said Michael Weinstein, president of AIDS Healthcare. He has clashed with porn producers for years over the issue.

"I don't know of any other industry where people go out in public and say they're not going to follow the law," Weinstein, whose group provides care to AIDS patients, said last week.

'FILM RECORD'

The language of the newly adopted condom measure does not state how it will be enforced. But Koretz said that violations would be "awful tough to hide" because they would be caught on camera.

He said that was especially true for large production companies based in porn hub the San Fernando Valley, which is part of the city. But he said some smaller companies, which are less likely to get film permits, were more difficult to track.

"If you're hiding in the weeds, that will continue to be the case," he said.

Paul Audley, president of FilmL.A., a nonprofit hired by the city to oversee television and film productions, said his office normally has Los Angeles police handle enforcement when problems arise with permitted shoots.

But Audley said last week that he told city leaders he believes workers with health licenses would be best able to make sure adult film performers use condoms. He said his office and representatives from Cal-OSHA would soon meet to discuss how the new city mandate should be enforced.

FilmL.A. hands out under 500 permits a year for adult movie shoots, Audley said. But some estimates put the number of adult films shot in the Los Angeles region at 50,000 a year, he said.

Now that it has succeeded in having the City Council adopt the condom measure, AIDS Healthcare is widening its campaign by pushing for a November ballot initiative that would force porn producers to obtain a public health permit from Los Angeles County officials. The permit is similar to what barber shops must receive, said Ged Kenslea, a spokesman for AIDS Healthcare.

If that county measure passes, it would stop producers within Los Angeles city limits from moving shop to neighboring communities to avoid using condoms, Weinstein said.

Porn producers have been critical of the condom mandate.

Steven Hirsch, the co-chairman and founder of adult film company Vivid Entertainment, said last week his company has a "condom-optional" policy and leaves it up to performers.

While over 80 percent of the U.S. porn industry is based in Los Angeles, where performers are regularly tested for sexually transmitted diseases, productions could move to other states or countries due to the condom mandate, he said.

Edson Barboza posts ?KO of the Year? finish of Terry Etim at UFC 142

Edson Barboza was cruising towards a solid victory, but that wasn't enough. The Brazilian decided to try a spectacular spinning heel kick (some called it a wheel kick) and Terry Etim's face was the unfortunate recipient.

Etim went down in a heap, his right arm stuck in the air. The Brazilian scored the third-round finish at the 2:02 mark to record his fourth victory in the UFC in the opener of the pay-per-view portion of UFC 142 in Rio de Janeiro.

What a way to kick off the PPV show at HSBC in Barboza's homeland. The fight was actually starting to get a little stale. Barboza used his low kicks to settle into a good scoring groove, but he didn't look like he was going to try for the kill.

The kick was perfectly executed and Etim never saw it coming. UFC analyst Joe Rogan said it was the first spinning heel kick knockout in the history of the UFC.

"When you fight in Brazil, it's unlike fighting in any other place in the world. In a fight, you try things and hope they work. Tonight, it (the kick) worked. It's something I've practiced a lot and I finally was able to land it hard," Barboza said.

Barboza (10-0) is a perfect 4-0 in the UFC while Etim (15-4, 6-4 UFC) has lost 2-of-3.

76ers win 3rd straight, beat Bucks 94-82

(AP) ? Jrue Holiday scored 24 points and Andre Iguodala had 21 to help the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Milwaukee Bucks 94-82 on Monday and remain unbeaten at home.

Everything is going right for the Sixers this season. They've won three straight, nine of 10 overall and already hold a four-game lead over the second-place New York Knicks in the Atlantic Division. The Sixers are 6-0 at home.

Iguodala went 9 of 14 from the floor hours after he was chosen as part of the 20-player men's Olympic basketball pool. Known as a lockdown defender, he surprised Tobias Harris with a block from behind late in the third.

Spencer Hawes, their 7-foot-1 center, buried his first two 3-pointers of the season in the third.

Andrew Bogut returned from concussion-like symptoms to lead the Bucks with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Hawes finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Lou Williams scored 17 points. The Sixers won without reserve guard Evan Turner, who sat out with a right quad contusion.

Williams cut off a late Bucks' surge with a 3-pointer that stretched the lead to 83-71. Their top reserve, Williams entered as the Sixers' leading scorer at 16.1 points per game. Six other Sixers averaged double-digit scoring, proving they don't need a superstar to make them contenders in the Eastern Conference, just team-oriented basketball.

Coach Doug Collins calls the Sixers perhaps the most unselfish team he's coached in all his years in basketball.

Check out the assist totals that go along with the points: Williams had six, Holiday five and Iguodala four.

Iguodala was rewarded for his defensive effort Monday when he was announced as one of the 20 players who will be candidates for the London Games. Iguodala, the ninth overall pick of the 2004 draft, has spent all nine seasons with the Sixers. He was the go-to defensive stopper for the U.S. team that won gold in the 2010 world championships.

"I think Dre's got a great chance if he stays healthy," Collins said. "He's gotten off to a great start for us this year."

While he's carved a reputation as a stout man-to-man defender, Iguodala bested Harris late in the third. Stephen Jackson made a nice dish to Harris as he cut down the lane, but Iguodala was there to swat the ball against the backboard with his left hand.

Hawes stunned everyone in the third when he nailed a pair of 3-pointers after missing his previous four attempts on the season. His first one gave the Sixers a 67-54 lead, then he stepped back to end the third with his second straight for a 76-62 lead. It was that kind of game.

The Sixers made 11 of 23 3-pointers. With a hand in the lane, they forced the Bucks to shoot a step or two beyond their comfort range and into 3 of 14 3-point shooting.

One weak point for the Sixers had been slow starts, but they made 12 of 19 shots in the first quarter and rolled to an early 13 point lead.

Brandon Jennings (18.7 ppg) was limited to seven points and missed eight of 11 attempts and was outplayed by Holiday. With Jennings struggling to get going, the Bucks fell to 0-8 on the road.

Notes: The Sixers are off to their best home start since going 10-0 in 2002-03. ... The Bucks failed to win three straight over the Sixers for the first time since 2005. ... The Sixers won six games at home by holding all teams under 90 points.

Motorola wins first round ITC patent victory against Apple (Digital Trends)

Motorola Droid 4 - CES 2012

In an early victory for Motorola, an administrative law judge at the U.S. International Trade Commission has ruled that Motorola Droid smartphones do not infringe on three Apple patents. Although the case will now go to a full six-judge panel at the ITC for a final determination, the ruling is a setback in Apple?s efforts to cast a dark cloud over Android devices as a product ?stolen? from Apple?s iOS and iPhone.

?We are pleased with today?s favorable outcome for Motorola Mobility,? said Motorola Mobility general counsel Scott Offer, in a statement. ?Motorola Mobility has worked hard over the years to develop technology and build an industry-leading intellectual property portfolio. We are proud to leverage this broad and deep portfolio to create differentiated innovations that enhance the user experience.?

Apple declined to comment on the ruling.

The legal spat between Apple and Motorola was actually started by Motorola; Motorola saw Apple targeting fellow Android device maker HTC and preemptively sued Apple for 18 alleged patent violations in October 2010. Apple quickly fired back, suing Motorola over multitouch technologies and user interfaces in Droid smartphones. The litigation has involved several suits in multiple U.S. states; all told, Apple has asserted Motorola violates some 24 Apple patents.

Motorola?s victory with the ITC follows on the heels of a patent victory over Apple in Germany, in which a court issued an injunction barring the sale of iPhones in a particular jurisdiction over a dispute about licensing Motorola cellular technology under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms. However, Apple has been making progress against another Android device maker, HTC: the ITC recently ruled HTC was in violation a single Apple patent, although HTC says its devices will never be barred from import into the U.S. because it can remove the infringing technology.

Bridesmaids Scene-Stealers Wilson Phillips Launch Reality Show for TV Guide Network (omg!)

The Wilson Phillips cameo at the end of producer Judd Apatow's comedy Bridesmaids was perfect timing for the band, who is now attempting a comeback with a new album and a reality show for TV Guide Network, Wilson Phillips: Still Holding On, which premieres on Sunday, April at 9/8c.

"We got a random phone call from Judd Apatow's people," bandmate Chynna Phillips told reporters at the network's winter previews on Saturday. "We just thought it was a real honor, and we love Judd Apatow's movies and thought he was hysterical, so we wanted to be a part of it. But we had absolutely no idea the impact our one baby cameo was going to have in this film. We were pretty taken aback and excited that it gave our careers the boost, the shot in the arm that we needed."

TV Guide Network orders more Hollywood Girls Night, Wilson Phillips: Still Holding On

The group, which also includes sisters Carnie and Wendy Wilson, has reunited to record a comeback album, which will drop on April 3. The album will cover songs originally sung by their famous musician parents --? Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas & the Papas.

Still Holding On is an eight-episode reality series that follows their journey back to fame, and in preview clips the three are seen bickering as much as singing. "The dynamics have always been exactly the same," Wendy Wilson said about the on-screen fighting. "We love each other no matter what. There's friction and there's fighting, but we fight like sisters."

The group has had previous individual experience with reality shows. Phillips was eliminated fairly early in the 13th season of ABC's Dancing With the Stars, Wendy Wilson appeared on Supernanny, and Carnie Wilson famously participated in Wife Swap, with less-than-flattering results. "It's all about editing, sweetie," Carnie told a reporter who asked about her experience on the show. "They can only fit so much material in 44 minutes. I really feel they misrepresented my husband, because he is a very hands-on father. We're passing down an incredible foundation for our children that I wish that I had as a child. I couldn't be more proud of my parenting style or my husband's."

Check out the rest of today's news

The three women are quick to defend their parenting skills, given that their own parents' lifestyles didn't make for the most ideal childhoods. "I think it inspires you when you come from an unconventional background to be a grounded mother and parent," Wendy Wilson explained.

Phillips added, "We're definitely not passing the doobies to our kids. That ain't happening."

National Blood Donor Month: Honoring Donors Who Give Hundreds Of Pints (SLIDESHOW)

When Dean Willis' father-in-law needed blood after getting heart-bypass surgery in 1975, he unhesitatingly stepped in to help, News4ajax.com reports. Since then, the coveted O-positive blood donor has given 100 gallons of blood and saved 2,000 lives. "I guess it's a clich?, but you know, it makes me feel good," Willis told the news outlet.

Hey,

If Mods don't approve of this thread, just delete, but I'd love to find a better place than the regular OT Lounge to discuss NFL Football WITH SENS FANS, and I know some people (Shanny) are into the NFL here.

Will my Packers go undefeated in the regular season?

That's the only real question left to ask... I say yes.

Yes, but Week 16 and 17 could be tough if they sit their starters...

I have a feeling that they're going to play their starters pretty consistently, if only because they know they have the bye week in the 1st round of the playoffs pretty much sealed up.

Nothing good an come from 2 weeks of no game action (ie: sitting them out week 17 and not playing in the 1st round). Rust will kill you against a hungry team who have already had a taste of playoff football.

Also: totally approve of this thread. Well done.

Yah, it's a good point.

And the thread is much needed IMO. There's never any legitimate discussion in the OT threads, and I think this thread will heat up in the playoffs.

There's a rumour that Brett Favre is interested in playing for the Bears ...

If that happens, he needs to sign with the Lions so he can say he played with every team in the NFC North...

He'll sign a one-day contract in Detroit and retire (AGAIN) a Lion to complete the embarrassment of playing for Green Bay's 3 main rivals within a span of 2 years.

It's like he's purposely trying to piss off Packer fans. I've never seen a 1st ballot Hall of Famer completely disregard the team that made him like Farve seems hellbent on doing.

Honest to God, it would be similar to Alfie playing for the Leafs, and then rumours going around that he'll sign with the Habs.

It must be horrifying for Packers fans.

I wish I could just press fast forward till next season. Colts are useless without Manning, only benefit is that the Colts look like they will draft Andrew Luck this year.

Mostly every season there's a missed call in the end zone. Last year it was Calvin Johnson when he had the ball in his hands and they didn't count the touchdown. **** happens in every sport.

Edit: I didn't catch the Packers vs Giants game but those pictures don't do any justice as they don't show when his other knee hit the floor.

Ravens control their own fate, if they win out they get home field advantage and a bye week . They went to the post-season every year since 2008,though they have yet to play one playoff game in their own barn(7 games on the road).

My Titans likely control their own fate down the stretch for the last wildcard spot, but with tough games against the Texans and Saints things are looking dicey as of now. Everyone kind of assumed the worst after last season though, so anything more than 8-8 is gravy.

No, it's very relevant.

Both feet or knees have to be inbounds for a reception to be considered complete. One knee down only counts as "down" once a player has possession of the ball, and to have possession in the endzone without being out of bounds, you need either two feet or two knees down inbounds before "taking the knee" so to speak.

*EDIT*
Coughlin believes it was a TD, but I'm fairly sure the rule for TD completions is as I described above. I admit I could be wrong, though, but I'm like 90% sure the rule is two feet/knees in bounds.

I'm too lazy to look it up in the NFL rule book.

*EDIT 2*
Wait, I'm not that lazy:

"A forward pass is complete when a receiver clearly possesses the pass and touches the ground with both feet inbounds while in possession of the ball. If a receiver would have landed inbounds with both feet but is carried or pushed out of bounds while maintaining possession of the ball, pass is complete at the out-of-bounds spot. "
and
"An official shall declare the ball dead and the down ended:
(a) when a runner is contacted by a defensive player and touches the ground with any part of his body
other than his hands or feet. The ball is dead the instant the runner touches the ground. A runner
touching the ground with his hands or feet while in the grasp of an opponent may continue to
advance"
... However, for the receiver to become a runner, he must establish possession first by having two feet inbounds when making the catch.

Also: in 2008, they eliminated the "forceout rule"
"The forceout rule has been eliminated. A player who receives or intercepts a ball must land with both feet inbounds. This affords the receiver and defender equal opportunity to complete the play.

"We feel that with so many levels of judgment that go into the force-out call it creates a more consistent play when either you get your feet down for a complete pass or you do not," says co-chairman of the NFL Competition Committee Rick McKay."

Haha, after the Shaub & Leinert injuries, that's like going for the Banana in a Grapefruit vs. Orange race.

Go Banana!
