Casey Abrams Speaks on New Album, Important Cause

During his season 10 run on American Idol, Casey Abrams was anything but predictable. Viewers really had no idea what they were in for each week, as this aspiring singer advanced farther and farther in the competition.

With Casey's first album as a signed artist out today, THG asked what fans can look forward to and he was pretty straightforward: More of the same!

"Expect fun," he said. "There are some singer/songwriter vibes, some upright guitar. A little bit of everything."

Abrams has remained an Idol viewer since leaving the show ("I feel like I have to be," he says. "It's like a high school reunion each year. I keep going back."), but he's also taken on a new cause: IBD spokesperson.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease affects 1.4 million people, including Casey, who was hospitalized during his time on Idol but hesitant to discuss why.

But he's since joined up with IBDIcons and released a music video that fan club members can view.

"It's more of a common disease than I realized," Abrams said. "It's smart to create awareness about it, so I figured I'd make a music video. Kids watch music videos, right?"

That they do. They also continue to make American Idol the most-watched show on television. Does Casey have advice for any of the top 10 about to go on tour this summer?

"Don't get a big head. That's the main thing. There's a lot of talent out there, so as long as they keep their head on straight, they should be fine."

Meanwhile, if you wanna see Casey playing at a venue near you over the next few weeks, you might have the chance. He'll be heading out on the road in promotion of his album.

"I'm just packing up my little Grand Marquis, maybe my ukulele, and we'll see where the wind takes me," he says.

Journey of an Astromom: healing from foster care

I have so many mixed emotions about foster care and adoption and that has been keeping me from writing about it. I knew that it had been awhile since I last blogged about anything related to foster care but when I looked today at my blog I realized that I haven't written anything since 2 days after our little foster girl left (about 8 weeks ago).

Our family life is drastically different now. There are only four people in our house and we are able to relax. Our bodies and minds are recovering from living in extreme stress for six months. The boys behavior is getting back to a healthy state but there is always room for improvement. We still see some lasting behavior that developed during foster care but that will change with more time. The first week with the two boys was very difficult still dealing with their recently developed behavior challenges but since that week, things have steadily improved. We have now been a family of four for 8 weeks and it stills seems to soon to be healed. We are still processing everything.

Our family has been healing and I am sure the healing will continue. We accomplished something big by taking another child into our home and a difficult child at that. I thank God that He was with us throughout everything and that increased our prayer time. But I also know that we didn't succeed at adopting a child. I have a life goal list and on that list are many things including foster a child and adopt a child. We accomplished one but the other did not happen. Some may call it a failed adoption. I know there are some that are thinking that. I also know that God is bringing more good out of this than I thought possible. So I am going to keep praying that God will continue to bring more good out of this difficult situation.

I am not sure what lies ahead for our family. There are times we think that this (foster care or having 3 kids) just isn't our ministry and God has gifted us with other talents. Now we can shift our focus to pursuing other things we are passionate about. But there are other times that I think maybe these 3 kids weren't our ministry and that this just wasn't our time. I can't say that we will never foster a child again or that we will never adopt a child. I don't know what is in our future. I know that we will not intentionally be changing our family size any time soon and we will not be doing foster care any time soon. Our family needs more time to heal and our boys need some more stability. I see that more now than ever.

Yanks end Dickey's scoreless streak, top Mets

By MIKE FITZPATRICK

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:56 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Not even R.A. Dickey's darting knuckleball could prevent another power show by the New York Yankees.

Robinson Cano hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning, and the Yankees touched up Dickey for five runs in a 6-5 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday night.

Nick Swisher hit an early three-run shot against Dickey, who was coming off consecutive one-hitters - making him the first major league pitcher in 24 years to accomplish that feat. But in a much-anticipated matchup at sold-out Citi Field, both he and Yankees ace CC Sabathia were missing their best stuff.

"We feel like we can beat everybody. We never go into a game saying, `We'll probably lose this one because this guy's hot,"' Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira said. "When people say, `You can't beat him,' we go, `OK, we'll prove you wrong.' It's kind of fun."

Leading off the eighth, Cano drove a 2-0 delivery from Miguel Batista (1-2) over the home run apple in straightaway center for his 16th homer and fifth in seven games. Taking advantage of a shaky Mets bullpen again, the Yankees won the final two games of the weekend series by one run to finish 5-1 against their crosstown rivals this season.

"Not too bad for a bunch of chickens," said Swisher, eager to take a shot at Mets closer Frank Francisco.

Before the series, Francisco called the Yankees "chickens" and later explained what he meant was that they often complain about calls by the umpires - especially balls and strikes.

Francisco saved the series opener Friday but was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with a strained muscle on his left side.

Including a sweep at home earlier this month, the Yankees have won five consecutive series against the Mets since May 2010.

The Bronx Bombers hit 15 home runs against the Mets this season - seven at reconfigured Citi Field - to account for 24 of their 32 runs. They lead the majors with 112 homers in 71 games, including 34 in the last 19 games.

"They hit balls out of the ballpark like there's nothing to it," said Mets manager Terry Collins, who acknowledged he should have brought in left-hander Tim Byrdak to face Cano.

The talk of the town lately, Dickey was riding an unprecedented roll of dominance that rivaled any in baseball history. But the knuckleballer had an uncharacteristic bout of wildness against the homer-happy Yankees and lasted only six innings. He walked three, hit a batter and threw his first wild pitch of the season.

"I didn't have a great knuckleball. It was just coming out wobbly a little bit. I kept searching for it," Dickey said.

Boone Logan (2-0) gave the Yankees another splendid performance out of the bullpen, and David Robertson retired Ruben Tejada with a runner on third to end the eighth. Rafael Soriano worked a scoreless ninth in the rain for his 15th save in 16 chances.

The Yankees have won 14 of their last 18 road games.

Sabathia, also coming off a complete game with double-digit strikeouts, gave up nine hits in 5 2-3 innings. He was betrayed by his defense while yielding five runs - one earned.

"It's up to me to be able to pick these guys up," Sabathia said. "I didn't make good enough pitches with two strikes."

Dickey received a big ovation during pregame introductions and sent a smiling Alex Rodriguez sprawling to the dirt with a high-and-tight pitch in the first - perhaps the first time he's been buzzed by a knuckleball.

Dickey used his bat and legs to help the scrappy Mets get started on their comeback from a four-run deficit. He singled off Sabathia in the fifth and hustled home from second on David Wright's two-out RBI single.

The 37-year-old pitcher slid into Chris Stewart at the plate, getting a face full of catcher's mitt as his helmet was knocked off and the ball squirted away.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, the Mets capitalized on Cano's error at second base to score three unearned runs with two outs. Vinny Rottino, pinch-hitting for Dickey, drew a four-pitch walk from Sabathia and screened Teixeira when Andres Torres grounded a two-run single just past the Gold Glove first baseman.

Tejada tied it with a single off Cory Wade, who struck out pinch-hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Dickey wriggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second but couldn't escape in the third. Two walks sandwiched around Rodriguez's dribbler for an infield single loaded the bases for Teixeira, the pitcher's old buddy from their early days in Texas.

Teixeira made solid contact on a sacrifice fly, ending Dickey's streak without allowing an earned run at 44 2-3 innings - second-best in team history behind Dwight Gooden's stretch of 49 innings in 1985.

Swisher then sent a 2-1 knuckler well beyond the 390-foot sign in right-center for his 11th homer and a 4-0 cushion. He clapped his hands high as he rounded first base and wore a broad smile when he got back to the dugout.

"Lucky," Swisher said. "I've never hit a ball like that off a knuckleballer, I know that."

It was the first home run off Dickey since Cincinnati slugger Joey Votto connected on May 17. After a no-decision in that game, Dickey won his next six starts heading into Sunday night.

"It didn't quite live up to the billing," he said. "But golly, I'm so proud of our guys who scrapped and fought. We can build off that."

NOTES: Yankees C Russell Martin sat out after leaving Saturday's game in the ninth inning with a stiff lower back. Stewart usually catches Sabathia anyway, but manager Joe Girardi reiterated that he wants to get Sabathia and Martin working together again. ... Raul Ibanez had three hits for the Yankees. ... Mets 1B Ike Davis, scratched from the lineup Saturday and sent home because of food poisoning, flied out as a pinch-hitter to end it. ... The crowd of 42,364 was the largest in the 4-year history of Citi Field.

Africa laments loss of 80% of Lake Chad water reservoir

Ahmad Salkida - Africa Renewal Saturday 23rd June, 2012

As you approach the Lake Chad basin from Maiduguri, in northeastern Nigeria, the evidence of despair is telling.

The air is dusty, the wind is fierce and unrelenting, the plants are wilting and the earth is turning into sand dunes. The lives of herders, fisherfolks and farmers are teetering on the edge as the lake dries up before their eyes.

Vegetation and water, the traditional staples of livelihood for the Lake Chad community dwellers, are vanishing. Vultures feast on dead cows as drought and desertification take their toll. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has called the situation an "ecological catastrophe," predicting that the lake could disappear this century.

According to FAO Director of Land and Water Parviz Koohafkan, the Lake Chad basin is one of the most important agriculture heritage sites in the world, providing a lifeline to nearly 30 million people in four countries Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger.

Lake Chad is located in the far west of Chad and the northeast of Nigeria. Parts of the lake also extend to Niger and Cameroon. It is fed mainly by the Chari River through the Lagone tributary, which used to provide 90 per cent of its water. It was once Africa's largest water reservoir in the Sahel region, covering an area of about 26,000 square kilometres, about the size of the US state of Maryland and bigger than Israel or Kuwait.

By 2001 the lake covered less than one-fifth of that area. "It may even be worse now," says Abbas Mohammed, a climatologist at the University of Maiduguri, Nigeria.

The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC), a regional body that regulates the use of the basin's water and other natural resources, maintain that inefficient damming and irrigation methods by the countries bordering the lake are partly responsible for its shrinkage.

As parts of the lake dry up, most farmers and cattle herders have moved towards greener areas, where they compete for land resources with host communities. Others have gone to Kano, Abuja, Lagos and other big cities for menial jobs or to roam the streets as beggars.

Those who remain in Lake Chad shoreline communities such as Doran Baga are haunted by the speed with which the lake is vanishing. The Doran Baga settlement, which used to be by the lakeside, is now 20 kilometers from its edge.

Alhaji Baba Garba, a 78-year-old fisherman who has spent his life on the banks of the lake, says that much of the village used to be alongside it. Pointing at one of his children in his mid-30s, Garba adds, "even before that boy, Suleiman, was born." Another villager, Salisu Zuru, laments the death of livestock.

The once busy Baga market in Maiduguri, where truckloads of fish from the lake used to be processed and then transported daily to other parts of the country, is now quiet. The villagers must now travel by canoe and on foot for days from Doran Baga to Dabban Masara, then to Darak in search of food. Darak is an affluent fishing community to the east of Cameroon's border with Nigeria.

The impact of the drying lake is causing tensions among communities around Lake Chad. There are repeated conflicts among nationals of different countries over control of the remaining water. Cameroonians and Nigerians in Darak village, for example, constantly fight over the water. Nigerians claim to be the first settlers in the village, while Cameroonians invoke nationalistic sentiments, since the village is within Cameroonian territory. Fishermen also want farmers and herdsmen to cease diverting lake water to their farmlands and livestock.

The LCBC established by the leaders of Chad, Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger in 1964 and later joined by the Central Africa Republic in 1994 and its partners continue to make efforts to save the lake or at least mitigate the impact of its shrinkage on people's lives. In his book An Inconvenient Truth, former US Vice-President Al Gore shows several images of the lake shrinking from 25,000 square kilometres in 1963 to just 1,500 square km in 2001. However, a 2007 satellite image shows improvements from previous years.

Recent drought may again have worsened the situation, says Professor Mohammed of the University of Maiduguri. He urges the LCBC and its partners to tackle the impact of climate change, as well as to control damming and irrigation by the LCBC countries.

The commission's member countries have plans to replenish the lake by building a dam and 60 miles of canals to pump water uphill from the Congo River to the Chari River and then on to Lake Chad. The replenishment project "will be the first of its kind in Africa," says Martin Gbafolo, the LCBC's director of water resources and environment. The commission has raised more than $5 million for a feasibility study. Although the total cost of the project will not be known until the study is completed, experts like Professor Mohammed expect it will take a huge injection of funds to save the lake.

Already the World Bank is providing $10.6 million for a project to reverse land and water degradation in parts of the lake. In addition, the LCBC is educating livestock herders on gaining access to grazing and watering areas. Water users are taught efficient water-utilization methods and fishermen more appropriate techniques for catching fish.

Of the 30 million people who depend on it, there is uncertainty as to how much longer the lake will remain and when they will be able to breathe a sigh of relief.

90 still missing after boat capsizes off Indonesia

(AP) ? Ships and aircraft found more bodies but no survivors Friday while searching for scores of men still missing after a boat carrying about 200 asylum seekers to Australia capsized in heavy seas south of Indonesia.

Four Indonesian and Australian warships, four merchant ships and five Australian government aircraft were searching in 2-meter (7-foot) swells, Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Jo Meehan said. All on board were male and about 90 were missing since Thursday's accident.

An Australian navy patrol boat and three cargo ships had rescued 109 survivors ? including a 13-year-old boy ? and delivered them to the Australian territory of Christmas Island 200 kilometers (120 miles) to the south, officials said.

The government lowered from 110 the number of survivors rescued, without explaining the revision. Three bodies also were recovered Thursday.

Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said most of the men were from Afghanistan. The growing number of asylum seekers trying to reach Australia by boat often originate from it and other war-torn or impoverished nations.

Surveillance aircraft saw more bodies Friday but no survivors. "I think we need to brace ourselves for more bad news," Clare told Sky News television.

Searchers still could find more survivors but rougher seas were making the situation "increasingly grim," Clare said.

About 40 survivors were found clinging to the upturned hull, while others were gripping debris up to 6 kilometers (4 miles) from the scene, Clare said.

The boat called Australian rescuers late Tuesday to report it was in distress but did not give its location, Clare said. The crew made another call Wednesday and said the boat was 70 kilometers (44 miles) south of the main Indonesian island of Java. Australian authorities advised the crew to return to Indonesia and told Indonesian authorities of the boat's situation, he said.

But an Australian surveillance plane crew saw it Wednesday afternoon continuing south toward Christmas Island and showing "no visual signs of distress," Clare said. Authorities there began preparing to respond, he said.

On Thursday afternoon, a surveillance plane crew found the boat had capsized halfway between Christmas Island and Java, still within Indonesia's zone of search and rescue responsibility.

He said the boat had made several calls Thursday morning that "raised concerns about the safety of the vessel," but he did not have details of those calls.

Speaking of Australian rescue authorities' response, Clare said that "it looks like they took proactive steps."

"All of the advice I have is that the work between Australian agencies and Indonesian agencies was very good," he added.

People smugglers often call Australian rescue authorities once they've reached Australian waters to tell them where their human cargo can be picked up. They then disable the boats so they cannot be forced to retreat.

Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean is closer to Indonesia than to the Australian mainland and is a popular target for the overcrowded boats carrying asylum seekers from Indonesia ? sometimes with deadly consequences.

Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency, said the capsized boat was reportedly carrying 206 people.

"We have done the best we can for the rescue effort," he said Friday, adding that he did not know whether the Indonesian fishing boat had been crewed by Indonesians.

Western Australian police were being sent to Christmas Island to attempt to identify bodies.

The U.N. refugee agency said the tragedy underscored the danger of such journeys by asylum seekers and the need to find alternatives.

"It also reinforces the need for renewed international solidarity and cooperation to find protection options for people," the statement said.

In December 2010, an estimated 48 people died when an asylum seeker boat broke up against Christmas Island's rocky coast.

Last December, about 200 asylum seekers were feared drowned after their overcrowded ship sank off Indonesia's main island of Java.

Secrets in a relationship: A necessity or a problem?

Full disclosure is often touted as the best bet in loving relationships, but in reality, most people tend to keep some secrets from their partners. But are such people being wrong? Is honesty always the best policy when it comes to relationships?

I recently read an article on the Huffington Post that looked into the issue. Affairs, debt, drink or drug problems, past bad behaviour and present sexual performance issues are all things people tend to hide from each other in relationships. Keeping secrets can create an unhealthy distance between you and your partner, although sometimes, it can be a bit of a grey area.

I once read an article about how many relationships needlessly break down after one person feels guilty enough to confess about a fast affair that?s been and gone. If the affair has fulfilled its purpose, does your partner really need to know? The author of the article (and, I believe, some sort of book), seemed to think that no, you needn?t share such a thing. In some cases, the article read, it?s not the affair that would end the relationship, but the guilt attached to it. Now, I?m pretty sure that if I were being cheated on in a relationship, I?d want to know, but some people, especially people who have been married for many years, have a don?t ask don?t tell policy that seems to work quite well for them. For others, though, the desire to have affairs and the willingness to follow through with them, highlights problems within the relationship itself.

Sometimes, these problems can actually be resolved, if both partners are willing to put in the work. In such cases, it may be beneficial to at least discuss the desire to have affairs in order to address the issues you and your partner are facing. On the other hand, any exposed secret can result in less wholesome consequences, such as relationship breakdown. For some people, ending a relationship that?s not going well is a risk worth taking when you?re trying to improve it. For others, stability is more important , even at the cost of living a double life. Where do you stand? Are there secrets you?d keep from your partner? Or do you believe relationships should be an open book?

At US hotels, Chinese treated to comforts of home

NEW YORK (AP) ? Major hotel brands are bending over backward to cater to the needs of the world's most sought-after traveler: the Chinese tourist.

Now arriving on American shores in unprecedented numbers thanks to a streamlined visa process and a rising Chinese middle class, Chinese tourists are being treated to the comforts of home when they check in at the front desk. That means hot tea in their rooms, congee for breakfast and Mandarin-speaking hotel employees at their disposal.

Chinese "welcome programs" at reputable chains like Marriott and Hilton even address delicate cultural differences: No Chinese tour group should be placed on a floor containing the number four, which sounds like the word for death in Mandarin.

"They're very relieved, like finally somebody's doing these things that make sense," said Robert Armstrong, a sales manager who handles all bookings for incoming Chinese travelers at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York. "Finally somebody's catering to them."

More than a million Chinese visited the U.S. in 2011, contributing more than $5.7 billion to the U.S. economy. That's up 36 percent from 2010, according to the Department of Commerce. By 2016, that figure is expected to reach 2.6 million Chinese.

In a striking departure from the traditional Chinese business traveler, a growing number of them are simply coming to America for fun ? with lots of cash on hand. (The average Chinese visitor spends more than $6,000 per trip.)

And so hotels are openly competing to win the hearts of the Chinese, who generally travel in large groups and stick to a tight itinerary, often packing multiple cities into a two-week American tour. What they're looking for is a hotel that makes them feel at ease with their surroundings, said Roy Graff, a travel consultant who educates hotels in proper Chinese culture and hospitality.

That may take the form of slippers and a tea kettle in the hotel room or a Mandarin-speaking employee at the front desk ? or all of the above.

"They drink tea. Eastern style, everything cold," explained Charlie Shao, president of Galaxy Tours, a New York City-based Chinese tour agency, who used to frequently request special amenities for his clients. "They don't walk inside the room with bare feet."

It's rare that Shao has to ask hotels for anything anymore. Marriott International, for example, now offers not one but several Chinese breakfasts, depending upon which region of China the traveler hails from: there are salted duck eggs and pickled vegetables for eastern Chinese, for example, and dim sum and sliced pig's liver for the southerners.

Major chains are also training employees to avoid cultural missteps that would offend a Chinese visitor. Superstition is a big one: Red is considered a lucky color, along with the number eight, which signifies wealth. The color white, meanwhile, is frowned upon, not to mention the cursed number four.

Failing to respect the pecking order in a Chinese group is another common blunder by hotels that have limited knowledge of Chinese culture.

"We try to make sure nobody's on a higher floor than their boss," Armstrong said. "Even if the boss is on a beautiful suite on the eighth floor, if the assistant is in a standard room on the 38th floor, it doesn't translate."

As hotels fine-tune Chinese outreach stateside, the race is on to build loyalty within China's borders.

Last year, Starwood Hotels ? which has a Chinese "specialist" at each American hotel ? relocated its entire senior leadership team to China for a month. The Ritz-Carlton rotates general managers and other hotel staff into its Chinese hotels for three-year stints at a time. And both chains are banking on the success of their customer rewards programs, which have been a big hit in China.

"It's important for our leaders to understand what's going on there at a more personal level than just the statistics," said Clayton Ruebensaal, vice president of marketing for the Ritz. "Everybody's going after this market because of the sheer volume of luxury customers. At the same time, it's a very crowded landscape."

In response to the surge in Chinese visitors, the State Department decided earlier this year to spend $22 million on new facilities in several Chinese cities and add about 50 officers to process visa applications. And in February, the U.S. government announced that Chinese visitors who had obtained an American visa within the last four years did not have to reapply in person but could apply via courier instead.

As a result, visa interview wait times in China are currently just under a week ? compared to last year's average of more than a month.

But some experts say the U.S. still lags far behind other countries, especially in Europe, when it comes to attracting Chinese tourists. Despite President Barack Obama's recent push to promote tourism, America is woefully ill-prepared to welcome China at an industry-wide level, especially at restaurants and major attractions, said Rich Harrill, director of the Sloan Foundation Travel & Tourism Industry Center at the University of South Carolina.

"We're not as ready as we should be," Harrill said. "We don't have the language skills. We have an opportunity to be on the ground floor of something that could be very, very big."

Nokia Lumia 610 with NFC hands-on

Nokia Lumia 610 with NFC handson

You never know what's going to be hiding in the deep dark corners of an event, and in our searches during the Windows Phone Developer Summit we came across the Nokia Lumia 610. But this isn't just the standard fare; no, this particular version offers NFC and should soon be making its way to Orange. Yes, by offering Near-Field Communication, the handset will be compatible with Nokia's NFC-enabled accessories like the Essence and Play360. While this elusive device is no stranger to us -- we've seen it shown on video, it's been certified for MasterCard's PayPass service and it's even been blessed by the FCC -- this was the first time we held it in our hands.

So what can we expect from this particular flavor of the Tango-running Lumia 610? Frankly, our impressions matched that of its non-NFC predecessor: build and overall feel remain unchanged from the original version. Naturally Nokia needed to find some space to stick the contacts and antenna, and those are inconspicuously found on the back of the device and on the battery cover, respectively. We still haven't seen any pricing surface, but it's been expected to arrive on Orange at the beginning of next quarter -- which frankly means we could well see it available within the next couple weeks, though we couldn't get an official date. Head below to get a good look at the NFC-enabled glory.

Big Papi's 17th HR helps Red Sox win

BOSTON (AP) - When Clay Buchholz pitches, the Boston Red Sox hit well. They needed that on Tuesday night.

David Ortiz started their three-homer barrage with his 17th of the season in the first inning and the Red Sox beat the Miami Marlins 7-5 despite Buchholz's worst start in nearly a month.

"Clay didn't have his great stuff tonight and the offense seemed to sense it," Boston manager Bobby Valentine said. "They were going to do what they had to do to get us enough runs."

Cody Ross, activated from the disabled list before the game, and Kelly Shoppach also homered as Buchholz (8-2) benefited again from a strong hitting attack. He entered the game with the second-best support in the majors, 7.51 runs per nine innings.

"That's the way the year's been going," Buchholz said. "Guys are scoring in the first inning and then keeping it going."

The Red Sox scored six runs in five innings against Mark Buehrle (5-8), breaking a 5-5 tie on Adrian Gonzalez's sacrifice fly in the fifth.

"You keep on getting hit around and giving up runs every inning, it's going to get you out of the game pretty early," Buehrle said.

The win came at Fenway Park where the Red Sox lost their previous three games, six of seven, and are just 15-19 this season. They began the day in last place in the AL East but won their fifth game in the last six overall and their third straight in the opener of a nine-game homestand. And they improved to 34-33, going over .500 for the first time since June 7.

Alfredo Aceves worked a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 20 opportunities.

"We haven't had much luck at home," shortstop Mike Aviles said, "but any win's always good."

There haven't been many lately for the Marlins.

They dropped to 2-11 in their last 13 games as Buehrle gave up three homers and lost his fourth straight start in a rematch of a 2-1 loss to Buchholz in Miami on June 12.

The Marlins scored more than four runs for the first time in 13 games and matched the Red Sox with 10 hits.

"We come out and score a bunch of runs today, which we've been struggling to do," Buehrle said. "I went back out and gave it right back up. I was frustrated by that."

Logan Morrison drove in all five Miami runs with a two-run homer and two doubles, then sent center fielder Ryan Kalish toward the wall where he made the catch with a runner on third and two outs in the seventh inning. The Marlins stranded a runner at second in the eighth.

"Obviously, the team comes first," Morrison said. "We've got to start winning games."

Buchholz was 3-0 with a 1.45 ERA and 28 strikeouts in his previous four starts but struggled against a team that began the day with a .213 road batting average, the worst in the majors.

The Marlins jumped on him in the first with a two-run homer by Morrison, his sixth of the season. But Ortiz tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a two-run shot.

In the second, another two-run homer, Shoppach's fourth of the year, put the Red Sox on top 4-2 before Morrison doubled in a run in the third.

Ross then hit his eighth homer, a solo shot, to give Boston a 5-3 lead in the fourth. It was his first game since recovering from a fractured bone in his left foot. Miami tied it in the fifth on a two-run double by Morrison.

Then the Red Sox went ahead to stay in the fifth when Aviles doubled, took third on Dustin Pedroia's sacrifice and scored on Gonzalez's fly to right. That made it 6-5 and they added a run in the seventh when the first two batters against reliever Chad Gaudin, Kevin Youkilis and Will Middlebrooks, doubled.

Pedroia left the game after fouling out to first base in the seventh on an inside fastball.

"He was more fearful that he was injured," said Valentine, who gave no further details.

NOTES: Boston put OF Scott Podsednik on the 15-day DL with a strained left groin. ... Miami's Ricky Nolasco (6-5) faces Felix Doubront (7-3) in the second game of the three-game series on Wednesday night. ... Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said he's been impressed with reliever Steve Cishek, a 2005 graduate of Falmouth H.S. on Cape Cod, who has pitched two scoreless innings against the Red Sox this season. He is 4-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 28.1 innings overall. ... Kalish misplayed two fly balls near the wall in center field. In the fifth inning, he didn't go back enough for Morrison's shot and the ball bounced at the base of the wall for a double. In the seventh, near the same spot, he dropped Jose Reyes fly for a three-base error.

Ahead of the Bell: 'Major' Microsoft announcement

(AP) ? Microsoft is expected to make a "major" announcement after the market closes Monday.

Speculation about the Los Angeles media event has ranged from an unveiling of a new tablet computer that uses low-power chips to a new system that will use an upcoming version of Windows to help people access TV shows and movies across a range of devices.

Microsoft announced a $300 million, 17.6 percent stake in Barnes & Noble's Nook e-book business in April, so a tablet-focused update is also expected.

The Windows 8 system is expected to be released in September or October, in time for devices that will ship for the holiday season. Windows 8 is considered to be the biggest change in decades to the widely used operating system from Microsoft Corp. It has been designed so that it can run desktop, laptop and tablet computers, giving PC makers a better chance of competing with Apple Inc.'s iPad.

"This will be a major Microsoft announcement ? you will not want to miss it," the company said in an email invite to the media on Thursday. A company spokesman declined to comment further.

The event, set to start at 3:30 p.m. Pacific time, is being kept under such tight wraps that the company has declined to provide its location until Monday.

(AP) ? His beating stunned the nation, left Los Angeles smoldering and helped reshape race relations and police tactics. And in a quavering voice on national television, Rodney King pleaded for peace while the city burned.

But peace never quite came for King ? not after the fires died down, after two of the officers who broke his skull multiple times were punished, after Los Angeles and its flawed police department moved forward. His life, which ended Sunday at age 47 after he was pulled from the bottom of his swimming pool, was a continual struggle even as the city he helped change moved on.

The images ? preserved on an infamous grainy video ? of the black driver curled up on the ground while four white officers clubbed him over 50 times with batons ? became a national symbol of police brutality in 1991. More than a year later, when the officers' acquittals touched off one of the most destructive race riots in history, his scarred face and softspoken question ? "Can we all get along?" ? spurred the nation to confront its difficult racial history.

But while Los Angeles race relations and the city's police department made strides forward, King kept coming before police and courts, struggling with alcohol addiction and arrests, periodically re-appearing publicly for a stint on "Celebrity Rehab" or a celebrity boxing match. He spent the last months of his life promoting a memoir he titled "The Riot Within: From Rebellion to Redemption."

King was declared dead at a hospital after his fianc?e called 911 at 5:25 a.m. to say she found him submerged in the pool at his home in Rialto, about an hour's drive from Los Angeles. Officers found King in the deep end of the pool, pulled him out and tried unsuccessfully to revive him with CPR.

An autopsy was expected to determine the cause of death within two days; police found no alcohol or drug paraphernalia near the pool and said foul play wasn't suspected. King's next-door neighbor said that around 3 a.m., she heard music and someone "really crying, like really deep emotions. ... Like tired or sad, you know?"

"I then heard someone say, 'OK, Please stop. Go inside the house.' ... We heard quiet for a few minutes Then after that we heard a splash in the back."

King's death was a grim ending to a saga that began 21 years earlier when he fled from police after he was stopped for speeding. The 25-year-old, on parole from a robbery conviction had been drinking, which he later said led him to try to evade police. He was finally stopped by four Los Angeles police officers who struck him more than 50 times with their batons, kicked him and shot him with stun guns. He was left with 11 skull fractures, a broken eye socket and facial nerve damage.

A man who had quietly stepped outside his home to observe the commotion videotaped most of it and turned a copy over to a TV station. It was played over and over for the following year, inflaming racial tensions across the country.

It seemed that the videotape would be the key evidence to a guilty verdict against the officers, whose felony assault trial was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, Calif. Instead, on April 29, 1992, a jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers on state charges in the beating; a mistrial was declared for a fourth.

Violence erupted immediately, starting in Los Angeles. They lasted for three days, killing 55 people, injuring more than 2,000 and setting swaths of Los Angeles aflame, causing $1 billion in damage. Police, seemingly caught off-guard, were quickly outnumbered by rioters and retreated. As the uprising spread to the city's Koreatown area, shop owners armed themselves and engaged in running gun battles with looters.

King ? who said in his memoir that FBI agents had urged him to keep a low profile if the officers were acquitted, expecting violence ? appeared at a news conference on the third day, asking for an end to the uprising. "Can we all get along?" he asked ? a question the city and nation have struggled to answer ever since.

Although the four officers who beat King ? Stacey Koon, Theodore Briseno, Timothy Wind and Laurence Powell ? were acquitted of state charges, Koon and Powell were convicted of federal civil rights charges and were sentenced to more than two years in prison. King received a $3.8 million civil judgment; one of the jurors in the case, Cynthia Kelley, is his fianc?e.

But he quickly lost the money as he invested in a record label and other failed ventures. He was arrested multiple times for drunken driving ? including last summer in Riverside, Calif.

Despite his troubles, King remained upbeat as he confronted the 20 year anniversary of the LA riots and considered his legacy.

"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he told The Associated Press in an interview earlier this year. "This part of my life is the easy part now."

He had three daughters and was engaged to Kelley.

He returned to the spotlight earlier this year as historians and news outlets explored the impact of the riots on its 20th anniversary, including the reforms made by the Los Angeles Police Department.

"Through all that he had gone through with his beating and his personal demons he was never one to not call for reconciliation and for people to overcome and forgive," Rev. Al Sharpton said Sunday. "History will record that it was Rodney King's beating and his actions that made America deal with the excessive misconduct of law enforcement."

Attorney Harland Braun, who represented one of the police officers, Briseno, in his federal trial, said King's case never would have gained the prominence it did without the videotape of his beating.

"If there hadn't been a video there would have never been a case," Braun said. "In those days, you might have claimed excessive force but there would have been no way to prove it."

The video also sparked an examination of Los Angeles police tactics under then-Police Chief Daryl Gates.

"The Rodney King beating stands as a landmark in the recent history of law enforcement, comparable to the Scottsboro case in 1931 and the Serpico case in 1967," said a July 1991 report produced by an independent commission led by Warren Christopher, who later became Secretary of State.

The report determined that despite many good officers, there were "a significant number of officers in the LAPD who repetitively use excessive force against the public."

Despite that scrutiny, the department continued to face scandals and critics of its practices until the U.S. government intervened. The department operated under a decade-long consent decree with the U.S. Justice Department' civil rights division to implement reforms on how it uses force and handles complaints; the department also gained more civilian oversight. The decree wasn't formally lifted until 2009.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who knew King for years, said he was more of a victim than a hero, and that his death reminded the nation of how far it still needs to go.

Gardea described King as a quiet neighbor until Sunday morning. Cory Hudson, King's cousin who lives nearby, said King enjoyed swimming and was known to get into the pool at night.

"It's just sad. I feel bad for all the family members," Hudson said. "It's been rough. And he was just getting his life really together."

Braun, the attorney saw King as "a sad figure swept up into something bigger than he was.

"He wasn't a hero or a villain."
