Odd notes, mad-dash trips mark Iowa closing sprint

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Iowa's GOP presidential contest remains deeply unsettled, if not downright strange, five days before the Jan. 3 caucus.

Rep. Ron Paul, drawing big crowds, got a surprise endorsement Wednesday night from Rep. Michele Bachmann's now-former state chairman.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, who has languished for months, suddenly seems to have momentum, just as former House Speaker Newt Gingrich may be losing his.

And Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who began the campaign by de-emphasizing Iowa, might be poised to finish on top, according to some new polls.

Romney now is making an unabashed push in Iowa. His rivals are scrambling to deny him huge momentum heading into the Jan. 10 primary in New Hampshire, his second home.

Paul, the 76-year-old libertarian-leaning Texan, drew about 500 people at the Iowa State fairgrounds in Ames late Wednesday. A group of Occupy activists tried to interrupt the rally, but that wasn't the main surprise.

State Sen. Kent Sorenson, who had campaigned a few hours earlier with Bachmann as a state chairman of her bid, announced he would support Paul instead.

Paul's anti-government appeal appears to tap into the desire of a frustrated electorate for profound change in an era of high unemployment and an economy that has only slowly recovered from the recession.

"In the last couple of weeks I fell into Ron Paul's camp," said Bob Colby of Newton, who spent 21 years in the military and is a former employee of a now-shuttered Maytag plant in town.

Paul, who is airing TV ads hitting Romney and Gingrich, planned a town hall meeting Thursday in Perry, Iowa, plus stops in Atlantic and Council Bluffs.

There were other odd campaign notes Wednesday.

Two politically active pastors in Iowa's robust evangelical conservative movement disclosed an effort to persuade either Santorum or Bachmann to quit the race and endorse the other. "Otherwise, like-minded people will be divided and water down their impact," said Rev. Cary Gordon, a Sioux City minister and a leader among Iowa's social conservatives.

Neither candidate appeared interested.

Meanwhile, an ever more confident Romney scheduled stops Thursday in Cedar Falls, Mason City and Ames. He has air support: TV ads say he has the best chance to beat President Barack Obama in November.

Asked Wednesday about the prospects for back-to-back victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, Romney demurred. "I can't possibly allow myself to think in such optimistic terms," he said. "I just have to put my head down and battle as best I can."

Santorum seems to be gaining steam, according to a Time-CNN survey and some private polls. "We're very, very happy with the new numbers," he told reporters in Dubuque.

Acknowledging widespread voter anger in an age of high unemployment, Santorum told an audience Wednesday: "If you want to stick it to the man, don't vote for Ron Paul. That's not sticking it to anybody but the Republican Party."

He planned Thursday events in the eastern Iowa towns of Coralville, Wilton, Muscatine and Davenport.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry adjusted his position on abortion for a second straight day, telling reporters he would allow abortion if a woman's life were at risk. On Tuesday, he had told a pastor that he had undergone a "transformation" on abortion rights and now opposed the procedure in cases of rape or incest after having recently met a woman who said she was conceived by a rape.

Asked if a mother's life was the only instance when he would allow abortion, he was concise as he boarded his bus Wednesday: "That's correct."

Perry planned Thursday events in Washington, Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown.

Gingrich, who has suffered a barrage of TV attack ads lately, also took aim at Paul. "I'm very uncomfortable with the idea that the commander in chief would think it was irrelevant to have an Iranian nuclear weapon," he said Wednesday.

Gingrich planned events Thursday in Sioux City, Storm Lake, Denison and Carroll.

Bachmann took aim Wednesday at her two rivals from Texas. She said Perry has spent "27 years as a political insider," and Paul would be "dangerous as president" because of his hands-off views on national security.

Bachmann scheduled events Thursday in Des Moines, Marshalltown and Nevada, Iowa.

Diet patterns may keep brain from shrinking

Thursday, December 29, 2011

People with diets high in several vitamins or in omega 3 fatty acids are less likely to have the brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer's disease than people whose diets are not high in those nutrients, according to a new study published in the December 28, 2011, online issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Those with diets high in omega 3 fatty acids and in vitamins C, D, E and the B vitamins also had higher scores on mental thinking tests than people with diets low in those nutrients. These omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D are primarily found in fish. The B vitamins and antioxidants C and E are primarily found in fruits and vegetables.

In another finding, the study showed that people with diets high in trans fats were more likely to have brain shrinkage and lower scores on the thinking and memory tests than people with diets low in trans fats. Trans fats are primarily found in packaged, fast, fried and frozen food, baked goods and margarine spreads.

The study involved 104 people with an average age of 87 and very few risk factors for memory and thinking problems. Blood tests were used to determine the levels of various nutrients present in the blood of each participant. All of the participants also took tests of their memory and thinking skills. A total of 42 of the participants had MRI scans to measure their brain volume.

Overall, the participants had good nutritional status, but seven percent were deficient in vitamin B12 and 25 percent were deficient in vitamin D.

Study author Gene Bowman, ND, MPH, of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland and a member of the American Academy of Neurology, said that the nutrient biomarkers in the blood accounted for a significant amount of the variation in both brain volume and thinking and memory scores. For the thinking and memory scores, the nutrient biomarkers accounted for 17 percent of the variation in the scores. Other factors such as age, number of years of education and high blood pressure accounted for 46 percent of the variation. For brain volume, the nutrient biomarkers accounted for 37 percent of the variation.

"These results need to be confirmed, but obviously it is very exciting to think that people could potentially stop their brains from shrinking and keep them sharp by adjusting their diet," Bowman said.

The study was the first to use nutrient biomarkers in the blood to analyze the effect of diet on memory and thinking skills and brain volume. Previous studies have looked at only one or a few nutrients at a time or have used questionnaires to assess people's diet. But questionnaires rely on people's memory of their diet, and they also do not account for how much of the nutrients are absorbed by the body, which can be an issue in the elderly.

US, Europe woes hit China manufacturing

China's manufacturing activity continued to shrink in December, HSBC said Friday, as economic strife in the key European and US markets hobbled demand for the nation's goods.

Workers arrange steel pipes at a factory in Huaibei, east China's Anhui province. China's manufacturing activity continued to shrink in December, HSBC said Friday, as economic strife in the key European and US markets hobbled demand for the nation's goods.

The final HSBC purchasing managers' index (PMI) reached 48.7 in December, slightly better than the 47.7 in November but lower than preliminary PMI of 49 released earlier this month, as new orders dropped.

A reading above 50 indicates expansion while a reading below 50 suggests a contraction.

While the figures are a slight improvement, the data adds to mounting evidence export-driven China is slowing and will ratchet up pressure on Beijing to further loosen monetary policies to prevent a painful hard landing.

Manufacturing activity contracted in November for the first time in 33 months, while consumer prices rose at their slowest pace in more than a year and industrial output growth hit its lowest level since 2009.

"Weakening external demand is starting to bite," Qu Hongbin, HSBC chief economist, said in a statement.

"This, plus the ongoing property market corrections, adds to calls for more aggressive action on both fiscal and monetary fronts to stabilise growth and jobs, especially with prices easing rapidly.

"Hard landings should be avoided so long as easing measures filter through in the coming months."

Beijing is anxious to prevent a sharp slowdown in the economy but at the same time it wants to avoid reigniting inflation, which hit a more than three year high of 6.5 percent in July but has since slowed.

The government has also enacted a series of policies to cool the red-hot property market, and official data has shown that home prices in most major Chinese cities fell in November from the previous month.

In a bid to boost growth and counter turmoil in Europe and the United States, China cut the amount of money banks must hold in reserve for the first time in three years late last month.

Poisonous snakes in luggage at Argentinean airport (AP)

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina ? A man tried to board a plane in Argentina with almost 250 poisonous snakes and endangered reptiles in his baggage, each meticulously labeled with its Latin name.

Czech citizen Karel Abelovsky, 51, was en route to Spain when airport officials made him open his baggage at Buenos Aires' international airport after police spotted the reptiles in the X-ray scanner. They found 247 exotic and endangered species in all, packed inside plastic containers, bags and even socks.

Authorities believe the Czech was a courier for a criminal organization that smuggles exotic species whose exports are banned, a judicial source told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Authorities said Abelovsky only arrived in Argentina days earlier and wouldn't have had time to gather all the animals.

Judge Marcelo Aguinsky believes the boa constrictors, poisonous pit vipers and coral snakes, lizards and spiders could have escaped the cloth suitcase in the unpressurized cabin of the Dec. 7 Iberia flight to Madrid, and perhaps attacked people there or at his final destination in Prague, where antidotes for South American snakes aren't common, the source added.

Abelovsky was released on about $2,500 bail after surrendering his passport and is refusing to talk even though he faces up to 10 years in prison.

Abelovsky runs a Czech website that offers reptiles for sale. A woman who answered the contact number given on the site said she was his wife but did not give her name and said only that her husband was "ordinary."

Czech authorities have no information about Abelovsky, said Martina Kankova, spokeswoman for Czech customs administration. She said authorities have traced several people or broken rings of smugglers of various exotic animals in recent years, including turtles and parrots.

Czech television reported earlier this year that in 2010, customs officials in the country detained 55 smugglers with dozens of exotic animals.

Most of the animals and bugs found on Tuesday are being held under quarantine at the Buenos Aires Zoo, while some of the venomous snakes were sent to Argentina's national health institute, which has a high-security department where scientists develop antidotes using venom from snakes.

The species include lizards native to Mexico and snakes, spiders, snails and other species from northern Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. Some were already dead in the suitcase, while others have succumbed to stress since then. Many were quite weak on arrival at the zoo, but most are still alive.

Wild snakes and reptiles are known to carry infectious diseases and so must be kept apart from the public and other animals, said Miguel Rivolta, the lead zoo veterinarian.

"It's difficult to find the right kind of bugs they eat, and to replicate as much as possible their environment in the wild," Rivolta said. "The best thing that can happen to these animals is that they liberate them as soon as possible in their natural habitat."

Viacom challenges final payment to Harmonix (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Viacom Inc said it has challenged the final payout due to former shareholders of music-based games developer Harmonix Music Systems, which it had acquired in 2006.

A private dispute resolution process on December 19 determined that Viacom, the company behind MTV and Paramount Pictures, owed an additional $383 million as compared to the $700 million sought by the former shareholders.

On Tuesday, Viacom said it filed a suit in a Delaware court seeking to compel the resolution accountants to consider arguments and evidence that were improperly excluded and to vacate their determination on the grounds of manifest error.

The final outcome of the case will be reflected in discontinued operations for the first quarter of 2012, the company said in a regulatory filing.

In 2010, Viacom sold Harmonix, the maker of the Rock Band franchise, to investment firm Columbus Nova, ending a failed foray into the video game business.

Viacom shares closed at $45.25 on Tuesday on Nasdaq.

Teen stabbed to death on London's packed Oxford St

LONDON | Tue Dec 27, 2011 4:33am IST

LONDON (Reuters) - An 18-year-old was stabbed to death in front of horrified shoppers on Monday during a fight between two groups of youths on London's Oxford Street, one of Europe's busiest retail districts which was packed with thousands of bargain hunters.

Police said they had arrested about 10 people over the fatal attack at 1345 GMT that led to the closure of parts of the capital's main shopping thoroughfare, popular with Londoners and visitors alike.

The day after Christmas Day is traditionally one of the busiest of the year on Oxford Street, with retailers starting their post-Christmas sales.

Later on Monday at about 1800 GMT a 21-year-old man was stabbed in the leg near Oxford Circus, one of Oxford Street's main junctions. Police said his injuries were not life-threatening and added it was too early to say if the two incidents were linked.

Officers arrested three men in relation to the second stabbing.

Evernote is an Internet service that lets you capture and work with stored snippets of data from a computer or mobile phone interface. The iPhone Evernote app allows you to save audio recordings, pictures and other data directly to your Internet Evernote storage. After using Evernote on your iPhone as a mobile data capture tool, you can organize your stored information from your iPhone or from the Evernote application on your computer.

    • The slider on the iPhone unlocks the phone after it has automatically locked. Apple's iOS 5 provides single-tap access to a camera button for taking pictures without unlocking the phone; if you need to take a picture quickly, you can go directly to the camera app to take your picture, and use the Evernote app later to upload images from photos you have already taken with your iPhone. Otherwise, you can put the Evernote app on your home screen or iPhone Dock for quick access; a swipe-and-tap will then bring you into the Evernote interface as quickly as possible.

    • Evernote on iPhones using iOS 5 have two different methods of capturing dictated notes: You can record audio notes directly from the Evernote interface, which uploads to your Evernote storage, or use Apple's Siri dictation mechanism to dictate an email from within the Siri interface. Every Evernote account has a special email address to which you can email data directly to your Evernote storage; if you add it to your address book, you can tell Siri to send an email to Evernote, and then dictate the contents of the note without ever touching the iPhone's keyboard.

    • Evernote provides an API for other third-party application developers to post information directly to an Evernote account. This integration must be enabled by the app developer; Evernote maintains a list of iPhone apps that have Evernote integration on its website. In most cases, tapping the share button onscreen brings up the share dialog, and tapping the Evernote button posts the displayed information directly to Evernote.

    • Evernote has its own additional applications that work directly with your Evernote storage, such as Evernote Hello, which allows you to track people you meet by capturing a photo of them with your iPhone, then tagging the photo with other information. Evernote will automatically add location and time data to the photo; for example, if you meet a number of people at a working lunch, Evernote will automatically track when and where you met them. You can use audio notes or email dictation to add your own notes to these contacts, and Evernote can track acquaintances you don't know well enough to add to your address book.

    • Evernote automatically provides optical character recognition scanning to any photos you upload, and the iPhone camera is high-enough quality to act as a mobile scanner. If you have papers that you wish to save to your archive but don't want to carry them around, the Evernote app can take pictures of the text of each page. The original picture will be uploaded to your account, but Evernote also provides a searchable index of the text it can recognize on each page.

Last-minute shopping? Five tips.

Last-minute shopping deals won't be as good as Black Friday. But last-minute shopping doesn't mean you have to pay retail, either.

Christmas is one day away ? and you?re still not done with your holiday shopping?

The bad news is that your best chances to save probably came and went with Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The good news is that you?re not doomed to pay retail. While last-minute shoppers have fewer deals to pick from, they can save money at checkout by remembering the basics?

  1. Check the ads.?Read all of your local Sunday newspaper ads in one place by using ShopLocal.com?s cool?Weekly Ads?feature, or go directly to the website of the stores you plan to visit to find their latest ad. If you don?t see anything that jumps out at you this week, you?ll have one more set of ads to pick from this Sunday, Dec. 18.
  2. Use a price-comparison search engine.?Once you figure out what to buy, take a minute to run it through websites like?PriceGrabber,?Bizrate, and?Nextag?to make sure you get it at the best price currently available ? whether you shop online or in person.
  3. Check for coupons and promo codes.?To ensure you?re not overlooking extra savings, first Google for [name of item] + ?coupon? or ?promo code.? Then check your favorite deals aggregator or our?Deals page.
  4. Look for Cyber Monday deals.?This past Monday, Dec. 12, I noticed that a few stores offered Cyber Monday deals. So I wouldn?t be surprised to see several big but short-lived deals this coming Monday, Dec. 19, since it?s the last Monday before Christmas and Hanukkah.
  5. Shop online.?To save time and gas, I bought all of my gifts online this year. Just be sure to order ASAP and check a store?s holiday shipping cut-off date before you place an order with them.

France to announce breast implant guidance (AP)

PARIS ? Tens of thousands of women in France, Britain and other countries are awaiting French government guidance Friday on what to do about their breast implants, which may be unsafe.

French health authorities are expected to make an unprecedented move to urge women with silicone gel implants made by French company Poly Implant Prothese to get them removed at the state's expense, because of the risks that they could rupture and leak a questionable type of silicone gel into their bodies.

It's unclear how far the French recommendations will go, and how much the extreme measures could cost the government as it teeters toward a new recession.

Britain, Italy, Spain, Portugal and other countries in Europe and South America are keeping a close eye on the French decision, which could have repercussions on their health guidance, too.

Women who have had their implants burst and leading French plastic surgeons are urging the government to act. The death last month of a woman who had the implants and developed a rare cancer catalyzed worries, though authorities have not reported any confirmed link between the implants and increased cancer risk.

About 2,000 Frenchwomen given pre-filled silicone gel implants made by Poly Implant Protheses, or PIP, have filed legal complaints against the company, based in southern France. Investigators say it saved 1 million euros a year by using industrial silicone instead of more expensivfe silicone meant for medical use in the implants.

The French government ordered a halt to production of the implants last year and the company is being liquidated.

The main concern of doctors and patients is the uncertainty surrounding the risks of the silicone used.

"I don't know what might be inside of me," said Annie Mesnil, 62, who had a breast removed after cancer in 1999, and was given a PIP implant.

After the product was recalled last year, a mammogram and ultrasound did not reveal any problem with her implant. But she had it removed anyway, at her own expense, out of fear. When her surgeon took it out and studied it, "he discovered it had already burst."

Among measures being studied Friday is one ordering plastic surgeons to reduce their fees for implant removal. The state health care system only reimburses about 230 euros for such an operation, but most plastic surgeons in France are private practitioners who can charge five to 10 times more than that for a removal.

Replacement implants are also an open question. Women with implants replacing cancer-damaged breasts should get reimbursed for new ones, but they make up a minority of women with implants. Surgery for solely cosmetic purposes is not normally covered by French state health care.

Health officials from several European countries held a conference call Wednesday to discuss the implants.

The health council of Italy's health ministry held an emergency session Thursday to discuss the pending French decision, and asked hospitals to track down women who received silicone implants made by PIP. The ministry estimates that about 4,000 PIP implants are in use in Italy.

The ministry's health council also said the national health system would pay to have the implants removed if medical conditions required it, such as if they ruptured.

While saying there was no proof of any greater cancer risk among women with PIP implants, the council suggested that women with the implants contact their surgeons because there's a "greater probability of rupture and inflammatory reaction."

British health authorities say they see no reason so far to have the French-made implants systematically removed, and have said that there is not enough evidence of a link between silicone implants and cancer.

The implants in question were not sold in the U.S., where concerns about silicone gel implants in general led to a 14-year ban on their use. Silicone implants were brought back to the market in 2006 after research ruled out cancer, lupus and some other concerns.

Imported garlic smuggled to India straining forex reserve

Nazmul Ahsan

A large quantity of garlic imported from abroad has been smuggled out to India through Bangladesh's porous border, draining hard-earned foreign currency and straining the country's falling reserve, an intelligence report has said.

High price of garlic in India where the spice is part of a daily menu for the nation's 1.20 billion people has spawned a flourishing new smuggling trade in Bangladesh's western border, the report by a key intelligence agency said.

The agency's probe has unearthed that this "unholy practice" has been going on for months in the bordering districts in connivance with the members of the Border Guards of Bangladesh (BGB) and Border Security Force (BSF) of India.

The illegal trade has become so "booming and problematic" that the agency suggested that the government impose "temporary ban" on garlic import and launch a crackdown on the spice hoarders based in the border districts.

"High garlic prices in Indian markets than those in Bangladesh are the main reason for the unethical trade," it said, adding one kilogram of garlic in India is now at least 50 taka costlier than Bangladesh.

On Wednesday garlic was sold between Tk35 and Tk 40 per kilogram in Dhaka, while imported garlic was traded between Tk 40 and Tk 50, a market report of state-run Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) said.

Commerce ministry officials said due to bumper production of garlic in the country prices of the spice have gone down by about 50 per cent in recent months compared to the rates during the same period last year.

They rejected an outright import ban of garlic, saying any final decision must follow consultations with the spice growers, traders, experts, agriculture ministry and revenue board officials.

"Garlic import enjoys zero-duty facility at the customs. So we can consider either slapping a ban or imposing duties on the import," a senior official at the commerce ministry said.

The official, however, told the FE that the authorities would make a decision on the zero-tariff status of garlic import very soon in an effort to ease the pressure on the country's declining foreign exchange reserve.

"We will come to a decision shortly because the issue is related to our foreign exchange reserve, which the government can not afford to drain further to benefit smugglers," he added.

The country's foreign exchange reserve has dropped below $10 billion dollars early this month, covering only about three months' import payment, down from around four months' payment during the same time last year.

The International Monetary Fund has asked the government to help preserve the forex buffer in the wake of renewed turmoil in the global economy and a spike in the country's import cost against a modest export and remittance growth.

According to the report, border areas in Sathkhira Dinajpur, Chuadanga, Jhinaidah, Rajshahi, Chapainawabgonj, Jaypurhat, Kustia, Kurigram, Meherpur and Jessore are the main smuggling routes being used by the rogue traders.

Trucks, pick-ups, motorcycles and even bicycles are used for transporting garlic from Bangladesh to India, it said, adding at least 300 smugglers are involved in the unlawful business.

According to government data, garlic worth Tk 1.18 billion was imported during the first quarter of the current 2011-2012 fiscal year.

The intelligence report said the traders use mobile phones to conduct smuggling since the network of a number of Bangladeshi cellular phone operators also covers miles into the Indian border districts.

The agency has asked the authorities limit network access in the border areas in order to tackle smuggling.

Lights out on Steelers

San Francisco rolls in game delayed twice by power outages

Image: MendenhallGetty Images

The 49ers swarm around Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall during Monday night's game in San Francisco.

updated 12:26 a.m. ET Dec. 20, 2011

SAN FRANCISCO - Monday Night Football nearly became a Monday Night Fiasco.

San Francisco's lights-out return to prime time helped salvage what could have been an embarrassing night for everyone involved on the NFL's biggest stage after a pair of power outages delayed the game for close to 35 minutes in all.

The 49ers rode their top-ranked run defense once again to beat ailing quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers 20-3 on Monday night.

Vernon Davis caught a 1-yard touchdown pass for the 49ers (11-3) one play after setting himself up with a 21-yard reception from Alex Smith, Frank Gore ran for a 5-yard score and David Akers kicked field goals of 22 and 38 yards to overtake Hall of Famer Jerry Rice for San Francisco's single-season scoring record.

The Steelers (10-4) missed a key chance to take sole possession of first place in the AFC North and gain the AFC's No. 1 playoff seed.

"I think we showed the world we can play the game of football on a national stage," Davis said. "At the end of the day that's what it's all about: respect."

Roethlisberger, playing on a sprained left ankle that had Big Ben in a walking boot during the week, threw two early interceptions and another in the waning minutes.

Even all those Terrible Towel-waving Steelers supporters couldn't will their team when San Francisco's unique home-field advantage became two blackout delays.

San Francisco became the first team in NFL history to hold an opponent without a rushing touchdown through each of the first 14 games.

Roethlisberger still finished 25 for 44 for 330 yards, but was sacked three times. After his second pick, he fumed as he limped off the field and could be seen yelling into his chin strap.

The 49ers made a big statement in their most meaningful home game since their last trip to the playoffs in January 2003, when San Francisco came from behind to stun the New York Giants 39-38 in one of the greatest comebacks in NFL history.

They had to wait 20 minutes to get started after the power went out the first time. It didn't seem to faze San Francisco.

Smith wasn't sacked after being taken down 18 times in the previous three games, including nine in the Niners' prime time flop at Baltimore on Thanksgiving night against Jim Harbaugh's big brother, John.

Jim Harbaugh prepared for the Steelers by comparing notes with his brother after the Ravens won both meetings this season with Pittsburgh in one of the AFC's fiercest rivalries.

The 37-year-old Akers, who long admired Rice from afar growing up in Kentucky, topped Rice's 138 points scored in 1987.

Yet Akers has said he doesn't feel deserving of the points mark over a great such as Rice ? who clowned around on the field before the game catching passes from fellow Hall of Famer and former QB Steve Young, including one in the end zone.

It was after Akers' second field goal when everything went dark for a second time. Thousands of flashbulbs went off in the midst of the black, with a sellout crowd of 69,732 sitting in darkness ? including all those Steelers fans who travel the country with their team.

NFL security chief Jeff Miller said he witnessed a transformer blow up while he was monitoring a gate outside the stadium, where a shooting during the preseason already put a negative light on this venue.

The second delay came early in the second quarter and halted the game again between the playoff-bound teams for about 15 minutes. Miller and other NFL officials gathered in the press box to assess the situation, remaining in constant contact with the commissioner's office.

This was the 49ers' only Monday Night game this season and their final regular-season home game at Candlestick Park. The NFL certainly will want to make sure there are no problems when San Francisco hosts a home playoff game next month as NFC West champions ? and Miller said he remains confident Candlestick can capably host a playoff game.

The Steelers missed linebacker James Harrison, who served his one-game suspension for a helmet to facemask hit on Browns quarterback Colt McCoy on Dec. 8.

This marked the fourth time in Monday Night Football history that two teams faced off with 10 victories and a winning percentage of at least .750 ? and San Francisco has played in all of them, the last on Dec. 15, 1997, with the 12-2 49ers vs. 11-3 Broncos.

Russian customs seize Iran-bound radioactive metal

(AP) ? Russia's customs agency announced Friday it has seized pieces of radioactive metal from the luggage of an Iranian passenger bound for Tehran from one of Moscow's main airports.

It was not immediately clear if the substance could be any use to Iran's controversial nuclear program.

Iran's semi-official news agency ISNA confirmed that material had been seized from the luggage of an Iranian passenger in Moscow about a month ago, but denied it was radioactive.

Russia's Federal Customs Service said in a statement that agents found 18 pieces of metal, packed in steel pencil cases, at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport after a radiation alert went off. It said the gauges showed that radiation levels were 20 times higher than normal.

Spokeswoman Kseniya Grebenkina told The Associated Press the luggage was seized some time ago, but did not specify when. The Iranian wasn't detained, she said, and it was not clear whether he was still in Russia or not. She did not give his name. The pieces contained Sodium-22, she said, a radioactive isotope of sodium that could be produced in a particle accelerator.

Kelly Classic, a health physicist at the United States' renowned Mayo Clinic, said: "You can't make a nuclear bomb or dirty bomb with it."

"You'd certainly wonder where it came from and why," Classic told The Associated Press. "It's prudent to be a little leery considering where the person's going."

Classic said the isotope can be used in devices that determine the thickness of metals.

Another expert, Michael Unterweger, group leader for the radioactivity group at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, said it can be used as a calibration source for radiation instrumentation.

Unterweger said "it's really strange" that so much Sodium 22 was in the luggage, but if he were the Russian authorities "I wouldn't worry about it."

Iran's ISNA news agency quoted an official at the Iranian Embassy in Moscow as denying that radioactive materials were seized from the luggage of an Iranian passenger bound for Tehran.

"About a month ago, a misunderstanding arose in connection with (an Iranian) student who was carrying some materials for dentistry uses. The issue was quickly resolved and apologies were offered to him," ISNA quoted the official as saying Friday.

ISNA didn't name the official but quoted him as blaming Western media for publishing incorrect information, although the reports first came from the Russian customs service.

"These reports seek to damage Iran-Russia relations," the official was quoted as saying.

Grebenkina said prosecutors have launched a probe into the incident but insisted that the material seized is not highly radioactive.

It was not immediately clear why the agency chose to make the announcement on Friday. Russia, which built the Bushehr nuclear plant in Iran, has aimed to show the international community that its nuclear cooperation with Iran is not connected to Iran's alleged aim of building nuclear weapons.

The U.S. and Israel have not ruled out a military option against Iran's controversial nuclear program. Iran denies the charge, saying its program is geared toward generating electricity and producing medical radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

Last month, the U.S. and its Western allies bluntly accused Iran of deceiving the world by trying to hide work on nuclear arms, and the U.N. atomic agency passed a new resolution criticizing Tehran's nuclear defiance.

Sergei Novikov, spokesman for Russia's Rosatom nuclear agency, told the AP that the pieces seized at Moscow airport are highly unlikely to have come from Rosatom and said the isotope is produced by particle accelerators, not by nuclear reactors.

In Russia, universities, research institutes and big medical centers have the technology to produce it, he said.

Novikov said Rosatom has never sold Sodium-22 to Iran, but it has supplied Iran with other types of medical isotopes.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said officials have contacted Russia for more information, and "Until we hear from the Russians exactly what they've got and how it all went down, I don't think we should evaluate."

A spokesman for the International Atomic Energy Agency, who asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to talk on the subject publicly, said that to his knowledge the agency had not yet been notified by the Russians about the seizure and had no information other than what was being reported by media.

Earlier this year, Atomstroiexport, a Rosatom subsidiary, launched Iran's first nuclear reactor in Bushehr. Russian officials have insisted the deal is in line with international agreements and will oblige Tehran to ship all the spent fuel from the plant back to Russia for reprocessing to avoid a possibility of it being used in a covert weapons program.

The U.S. House of Representatives, meanwhile, endorsed harsher sanctions Wednesday against Iran aimed at derailing its suspected pursuit of nuclear weapons.

Do I Need Title Insurance If I Am Buying A Short Sale? | REALTOR ...

questions

Q:Do I need to get my own title policy for the purchase of a short sale, or can I rely on the one the seller pays for and the bank provides to me at the closing? what happens if all liens have not been presented?
?Kate, Portage, MI

A: I strongly recommend having title work done showing a clear title meaning the seller has satisfied all liens found during the title work prior to closing. A title policy is like an insurance policy saying there are no liens or clouds on the title when they convey it to you. The mail away title companies I have personallhy worked with handling the mainstream processes for a lot of these short sale and foreclosures have been great but you can always ask to use your own title company of preference as part of your negotiations and they may allow that or they may suggest that you use your title company for a courtesy closing after the other title company does the title search and provides the title policy. The courtesy closing allows you to close in person signing documents locally at your own title company and you can ask questions but they will charge a fee for this generally between $100-$500 and of course it could be more.
Katie Tucker is a Realtor? with Keller Williams Town & Country in Tallahassee, Florida

A: The seller usually purchases an ower?s title policy and the buyer usually purchase a lender?s title policy if the buyer is using a loan to purchase. It is usually a requirement of the loan to purchase title insurance to protect them as well as the buyer if there are title issues. If you are purchasing with all cash, I would still purchase title insurance to protect you. The seller?s policy doesn?t protect a new buyer.

Bev
Beverly Houlier is a Realtor? with Hilltop Chateau Realty in San Diego, CA.

A: Title insurance guarantees the simple ? yet vital ? fact that you own your property and no one else has a claim to it.

There are two types of title insurance policies: the lender?s policy and the owner?s policy. The lender?s policy protects the lender?s interest for the amount of the loan ? not necessarily your home?s purchase price, if the two figures differ. This type of policy is issued to institutional lenders. In addition, the lender?s title policy covers any losses that the lender would incur if the interest of another creditor, such as a second mortgagor, takes precedence in the event of a foreclosure.

The owner?s policy covers your losses or damages if it?s determined that the property belongs to someone else, there?s a defect or lien on the title, the title can?t be marketed, or there?s no access to the land. Your owner?s policy will stipulate the date by which the terms are effective ? the key to your ownership rights.

Most homeowners never have to file a title insurance claim; however, that doesn?t mean that you should write this form of insurance off as superfluous. In the event that a third party makes a claim about your property, title insurance can make the difference in retaining your house.
Lee Dworshak is a Realtor? with Keller Williams LA Harbor Realty in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.

A: There is no rule stating that the seller or bank will provide you title insurance. They sometimes pay it to help a buyer purchase a home, but it is not a given.

You will want title insurance for the purchase on ANY real property. Speak with the title insurance company representative as to what coverage you have for unrecorded liens and ask about what additional coverage is available to you.
Adam Aguilar is a Realtor? with Reliantra in West Toluca Lake, CA.

A: You should be able to rely on the title seller provides. Just make sure it is a reputable title company and you should not have any problems, after all it is the title company insurance.
Tami Winbury is a Realtor? with Keller Williams Realty in Oxnard, CA.

South Pole Discovered, December 14, 1911

Map of Amundsens journey, from Scientific American, Vol. CVI, No. 12, March 23, 1912. Image: SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN

One hundred years ago today the South Pole was reached by a party of Norwegian explorers under the command of Roald Amundsen. The existence of the pole had been known, but the inhospitable landscape presented a barrier until Amundsen?s party made the dangerous trek across ice and snow to stand at the geographical South Pole on this day a century ago.

One of Amundsen?s competitors, Robert Falcon Scott and his party, achieved a different kind of fame: they arrived on January 17, 1912 to find they were second in the race to fame, and they perished on their way back north.

News of Amundsen?s achievement was telegraphed to the world on March 7, 1912, on his return to Hobart, Australia.

From Scientific American, Vol. CV1, No. 11, March 16, 1911
The Discovery of the South Pole

It is much too early to give any critical account of Capt. Roald Amundsen's achievement. Many weeks must elapse before we are in complete possession of all his data. Yet even the laconic account, which he has cabled to the press, throws a flood of light on the mystery of Antarctic geography. Amundsen seems to have collected enough evidence to substantiate the theory that the great chain of mountains which extends almost uninterruptedly from Alaska to Patagonia finds its continuation in a ridge connecting Victoria Land and King Edward VII Land, and which, in honor of his queen, he has named "Queen Maude's Range."

The ice barrier, which had proved for a century and a half a formidable obstacle to Antarctic exploration, is found to terminate in a bay, lying between the southeast mountain range running from South Victoria Land and a range which is probably a continuation of King Edward the VII Land and which extends in a southwesterly direction. Contrary to his original plan, Amundsen despatched one of his officers, Lieut. Prestud, to survey the Bay of Whales and the great ice barrier and to explore King Edward VII Land, of which practically nothing is known. No doubt the spur of competition played its part in unfolding the secrets of the last unexplored frigid region of the earth.

No less than four other expeditions were in the Antarctic regions at the time while Amundsen was forcing his way south. Besides Amundsen's, there was the Japanese expedition under Lieut. Shirase, which had to retreat to Australia last spring in order to replenish its supply of dogs, and which Amundsen says landed on January 16th at the Bay of Whales, two weeks before he sailed for home; Dr. Mawson's Australian expedition, for which $215,000 had been raised up to November 1st last, and which was to land three parties between Cape Adare and Gaussberg; the German expedition under Lieut. Filchner in the "Deutschland," elaborately equipped with wireless, magnetic, and meteorological apparatus, full of the hope of establishing a base southwest of Coats Land in as high a latitude as possible; and lastly, Capt. Scott's English expedition in the "Terra Nova," which left New Zealand in November, 1910, badly damaged by stormy weather; so badly, indeed, that the necessary repairs and the cost of making good the stores that had been lost seriously depleted the resources of the party.

Amundsen seems to have been helped by exceptionally favorable weather conditions. To be sure, there were storms, but not those frightful hurricanes which thwarted Shackleton. It was cold, so cold that the dogs suffered visibly; yet the average temperature was no lower than that in many an inhabited part of Canada. Amundsen himself states that part of his journey was much like a pleasure trip--"excellent ground, fine sledging, and an even temperature." The glaciers and crevasses make detours necessary, yet, despite them, progress was remarkably rapid. The party climbed up 2,000 to 5,000 feet in a day. Throughout much of his journey Amundsen covered entirely new ground. Therefore he will bring back absolutely new information of Antarctic geography. He made up his mind that he would reach the plateau on which the Pole is situated by another route than that of Beardmore Glacier. Luck, instinct, experience, call it what you will, the new route proved easier than that which either Shackleton or Scott took on their expeditions. To that comparatively easy route, coupled with exceptionally favorable weather, may be attributed Amundsen's success.

Thieves clean out church ... during the service

"They left the Bibles," Pastor Mona Harper tells Bill Liss of WXIA-TV.

By msnbc.com staff and NBC News

Thieves tore apart the youth center of a Georgia church and made off with nearly everything they could ? including a refrigerator, a stove, a microwave oven, broilers and the copper in the ceiling ? while the congregation worshiped during Sunday services upstairs, the church's pastor says.

"They stood on the chairs and took all the copper. They took our kitchen utensils," said Mona Harper, pastor of Kingdom City Church in Stone Mountain, a suburb of Atlanta.

But then they went a step further, NBC station WXIA of Atlanta reported.

"They took crayons, magic markers and DVDs. They left the Bible and the Scrabble game, but they took the board games," Harper said.

"Things that we use to get kids off the street, they just took it," she said.

WXIA-TV

Pastor Mona Harper surveys the damage at Kingdom City Church in Stone Mountain, Ga.

The break-in was discovered Wednesday when members arrived for weekly Bible study. Harper said she believes the break-in started during Sunday night services because the sound system and lights began malfunctioning.

"They were apparently downstairs cutting electricity to some of our units," she told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

News of the break-in galvanized community support in the Atlanta area.

Within an hour, Home Depot ? whose corporate headquarters is in Atlanta ? donated a refrigerator, a stove and a microwave oven. The School Box, a chain of education supply stores in the Atlanta, offered to replace the stolen school supplies.?Mount Carmel Christian Church in Stone Mountain, meanwhile, offered to let Kingdom City use its facilities for services.

Harper, whose leads the congregation with her husband, James, the church's bishop, said the robbery had left her undeterred.

"If somebody could come in on a Sunday night while church is going on and literally rob a church ? not only rob it but endanger the people and possibly could have set this place on fire ? I believe that my work here is more needed than it's ever been."

Police said they were investigating the incident.

Time names 'The Protester' as 'Person of Year' (AP)

NEW YORK ? "The Protester" has been named Time's "Person of the Year" for 2011.

The selection was announced Wednesday on NBC's "Today" show.

The magazine cited dissent across the Middle East that has spread to Europe and the United States, and says these protesters are reshaping global politics.

Last year, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg got the honor.

Time's "Person of the Year" is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke received the honor in 2009. The 2008 winner was then-President-elect Barack Obama. Other previous winners have included Bono, President George W. Bush, and Amazon.com CEO and founder Jeff Bezos.

Time said it is recognizing protesters because they are "redefining people power" around the world.

European regulators set sights on Carrier IQ, rootkit scandal goes international

Carrier IQ
Most of the bruhaha over Carrier IQ and its activity-tracking rootkit has been contained to the US so far. That's about to change though, and the software company could find itself at the center of an international privacy scandal. The British Information Commissioner's Office and the European Consumers' Organization have both started looking into the diagnostics software, while the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection has specifically engaged with Apple over its inclusion of parts of Carrier IQ's suite in iOS. This, of course, comes only days after US lawmakers requested their own government open an investigation. So far, all of the major British providers have denied using the tool on their handsets but, the drama is still unfolding and there's plenty of time for others to get caught up in this mess.
